"No weapon?" the driver of our vehicle barely spared a glance my direction.
"Felix's orders," the name sounded off coming from my tongue and I crossed my arms.
The driver studied me with narrowed green eyes before slowing the truck to a stop. I swallowed, my throat suddenly so incredibly dry and my eyes suddenly on fire. My cheek burned the worst though, as grey eyes hadn't left it the entire ride.
Felix finally shifted his gaze from me to the door. His muscles barely braced as he slid out of the door in ninja-like silence. I copied him, my feet crunching onto the graveled road.
"Good luck, Felix," the driver glared at me. "Watch your back."
Felix flicked his hand, signaling he'd heard yet hadn't cared. I followed him into the thick brush with my gaze held high. If there was one thing I had to prove it was that I could handle myself at least to some extent. Maybe that would gain my freedom from Felix's constant scorching gaze.
"You're walking too loud," Felix almost growled.
"We're nowhere near enemies anyways," I retorted. "If we'll even see any."
Felix hesitated at the edge of the trees we'd made it through, his gaze flickered with confusion. I let out a little huff and crossed my arms, stepping up to his shoulder.
"What? You didn't think I'd figure out that this mission has no danger whatsoever?" I glared at him. "Why else wouldn't I have a weapon?"
Felix's face was like a stone- impossible to understand what was going on in the interior. "There are always dangers."
My breath was suddenly taken away as Felix kicked my legs out from under me. I let out a frustrated grumble as a rock scraped my palm.
"Even things that don't seem dangerous are," Felix picked up the rock and tossed it a few times in his hand.
"I hate you," I muttered, managing to stand up despite my throbbing hand.
"The feeling is entirely mutual," Felix snapped over his shoulder as he began walking towards a small tower and building.
I shrugged out my shoulders and sulked forwards, glaring at the back of Felix's head in hopes it would diminish like I wanted his entire being to. Felix entered the small building with ease, the heavy door unlocked.
My hands traced along the insignia on one of the walls- a noble sign with bold lettering and an American flag. I could recognize it from miles away. It reminded me of Mason and Harper and how I would possibly never see them again.
"Your depression is making me miserable," Felix growled from where he pressed buttons on the control-type desks.
"Not my fault you're unable to handle it."
I removed my hand from the wall, avoiding Felix's heavy gaze as I looked out to the confusing tower. "What is this thing even for?"
"It helps your friends communicate with their little friends," Felix taunted. "Destroying it will result in their struggle increasing."
I studied the tower once more before facing Felix. His grey eyes were trained on me as if expecting my outburst to come fully loaded. Rather than argue with him about Mason and Harper once more, I walked past him towards the door.
"I'll set the charges."
I reached the bottom of the tower in less than a minute. There were lots of pieces of rubbish, proving no one really kept track of this tower anymore. Why, then, would Menendez have any interest in taking it out then?
One jab at a time.
Moving forwards, I set up three different charges along the base of the tower. They each had a flashing red light, depicting the set up was ready to blow with the push of a button. I began to walk away, hoping Felix would be caught up in the explosion.
"Emma, look out!"
I looked to my left to see a different explosion going off in the short distance. The direct line of fire was towards the tower and I took a cautious step back. Shortly, the tower was engulfed in raging flames.
As the tower let out a groan, I realized the charges were going to be set aflame as well. That thought made me stumble backwards to try and escape.
Arms were suddenly around me as the loud explosion of each charge went off as one.
I landed on the grassy ground, a muscle beneath my shoulders and hips. My hands found the shirt of Felix as we took cover behind a steel barrier. The flames flew over us with a hiss.
"Come on, we have to get out of here before the whole place blows!" Felix released me and rolled away.
I scrambled to catch up to him. My waste of time ended with Felix latching his hand onto my bicep and dragging me next to him. We began running across the field back the way we'd come.
Once we reached the trees, I was panting and gasping for air that didn't seem to be there. Felix immediately spun around, unfazed by our outburst of speed, and glared through the distant flames. His grey eyes rested upon a distant figure which happened to be walking away.
"Who was that?" I coughed.
Felix's jaw tightened to my words and he moved his gaze away from the fire to me. "I couldn't tell. Someone attacked us though."
"Let me guess, it was one of my friends," I snarled.
Felix studied me with a strange calmness. "I wouldn't be so sure this time around, Emma."
I wiped my mouth with the back of my sleeve and then looked out to the fallen tower. "At least we completed the mission."
"Menendez will be pleased."
"He better be, that fall hurt," I felt my elbow.
Felix hesitated, his gaze traveling silently all over my body in worry, before clearing his throat. "Well, we best be on our way."
I gazed after his strong form as he walked away from me deeper into the trees. Was it possible Felix actually cared about me even as an acquaintance? I'd even accept "teammate" at this point in time.
"Come on, Reeves!"
The way he said my last name...it was oddly satisfying. It was the cold sand on a hot beach day. It made me succumb to his command and follow him like a dog.
Felix called in a ride home after we reached the gravel road once more. The vehicle came in minutes, as if awaiting the call the entire time.
Felix moved to open the back door for me. I paused at his side, glaring upwards at his handsome face reflecting the sun like a mirror.
"I still hate you."
I could detect his smirk before he even set it on his face. Felix rested a hand on the middle of my back and lowered his lips to my ear.
"I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Emma."
