"We're moving into the city!"
"Targets located!"
"Shit! We're under fire!"
The voices of Menendez's men were practically an annoying buzz in my ear. Felix and I were fighting our way through the streets, using specially crafted bullets that only knocked out the victims. Our target, set by Menendez back at base, was to reach the top of one of the tallest buildings in Los Angeles. There, we were supposed to set up a jamming system to disable all comms of enemies in the area.
"Heat signatures to the left," Felix kept his voice low as him and I slid behind cover.
We avoided contact at all costs, including that of our own teammates. Felix led the way through the city, leaving me to make sure our six's were clear and empty buildings were truly empty of civilians.
"What side?"
Felix peeked around the corner, but didn't reply. I touched his shoulder.
"Felix?"
"Enemies have moved on."
With that, Felix continued across the mini plaza, a broken and dried up fountain resting at the center of it. I trailed behind Felix and took in the view of the city, deranged from the attacks. It amazed me how easily war could destroy an entire county in seconds.
"We're nearing the target building," I realized Felix had his comms turned on for our safety.
"Proceed with caution," the voice of one of the Captains replied. "We detected enemy signatures earlier."
"How many?"
"A dozen."
Felix cursed under his breath and then reloaded his weapon. I was the type to always keep my gun completely loaded, so instead I pressed into the building. Felix brought up the rear just seconds after.
"Goddamn," I whispered. "This place is torn apart."
Felix muted his comms. "Menendez isn't letting any information slip through his fingers on this one."
"We've won already," I sighed. "Why he's pushing on is beyond me."
"Maybe he's trying to finish this today."
I met Felix's gaze. "That's not possible."
"Don't underestimate him."
We used the multiple stairwells to climb to the top of the building. I usually hated stairs, but the adrenaline of the battle was ushering me up them faster than normal. Even when Felix had stopped to catch his breath, I continued.
Once I reached the top of the building, I kicked open the door to the roof. Sunlight filtered through my gloved hand as I raised it to block the light. I came face to face with a set up ready to launch the wave of destruction.
"Are we really doing this?"
"If we stop now, we're done for."
I sighed as Felix set up the short signal-blocking device. My eyes strayed over the city, a ruin compared to the jewel it'd once been. Smoke appeared from multiple places, buildings collapsed to nothing. Shots and firing of warfare still went on mindlessly.
"Alright, it's done," Felix backed away from the complex machine. "Click the button."
I hesitated, looking from the remote in my hand to Felix. "Are you sure?"
