Beep, beep, beep. The incessant noise of her alarm clock woke Jiyoon up and she groaned as she reached out trying to turn it off. She managed to knock the alarm onto the floor, turning off the annoying sound. Time to wake up! However, she didn’t want to move and only pulled the covers higher over her head, curling into a foetal position facing her window.
She sniffed and closed her eyes, trying to go back to sleep. Until she felt a movement from behind her. Jiyoon squeezed her eyes shut tighter, when the rustle of the bed sheets and then a soft groan made her freeze. The small movement made her remember the previous night. No, it was all a dream. It can’t be real. I did no see him here last night. She turned her head slowly, peering out from under the covers to see that Luhan was stretching out his arms like a cat. Her eyes became slits as she squinted at the sight before her.
Luhan turned his head and smiled at the hidden Jiyoon. “Good morning, jagiya!” he said and positively beamed at her. He moved closer, pulling the covers from her face, curling a piece of hair behind her ear. “How are you this morning?”
“I’m fine. Just get out of my bed,” she growled and turned away.
“Oh, I see. As you wish,” he said, sounding a little sad.
His tone of voice made Jiyoon turn to see Luhan’s back as he stood from the bed. Now in the bright morning sunlight, she could see that he was not only bare chest but he was also only wearing sweatpants. She watched as he pulled on a simple white v-neck shirt and walked languidly towards the door. There he turned around to face her and saw that she was watching him. His eyes lit up with hope for a second before going back to his sad expression as Jiyoon didn’t say anything.
“I’ll see you downstairs then.”
Only when the door had shut did she sigh loudly. It wasn’t a dream. Not at all. Luhan really is her “Husband”. Jiyoon pushed the covers away and stretched then stood, picked up her alarm clock and moved towards her closet to pick out her uniform. It was Thursday today. She tucked her hair behind her ears and opened the closet doors.
“It’s going to be a long day, today,” she sighed, taking out her blue blazer, white blouse, black pleated skirt and knee-length white socks. Jiyoon held out her clothes and looked into the mirror hanging on the back of her closet door. She blew on her hair and walked to the bathroom to get ready.
---7:35am---
Luhan sat there eating toast, munching away at the bread and every so often sipping at his orange juice. Mrs Park bustled around the kitchen, making Jiyoon’s favourite strawberry pancakes and stacking them neatly on a plate, while Jiyoon’s little brother, Jihoo sat there staring at Luhan and admiring this hyung that had appeared from nowhere. As Mrs Park stepped out of the kitchen with the pancakes, Jiyoon was walking down the stairs while tying a ribbon into her ponytail. She adjusted her large hipster glasses and sat down at the dining table. Not once did she look at Luhan, purposefully ignoring his presence.
Mrs Park placed the plate in front of Jiyoon and patted her shoulder. She leaned down and whispered, “Don’t be so harsh, he’s really a kind boy.” Jiyoon looked at her mother and muttered incoherently about something like “Babo” and “I don’t believe you.” Jihoo looked at his older sister, frowned and went back to swirling his orange juice.
“Hyung-nim?” he asked, looking at Luhan with respect.
“Hmm?” Luhan turned to the little boy and titled his head.
“Will I be cool like you one day?”
Jiyoon coughed loudly as she choked on her water. She thumped her chest and went back to watching her mother place another plate of pancakes in front of her father along with a cup of tea before sitting next to her father.
“Of course. Just work hard and learn to be a better person. Do everything to the best of your ability!” Luhan replied while looking at Jiyoon’s pink face and chuckling.
Mr Park only nodded and picked up his tea, not looking away from his newspaper. Jiyoon sighed and went back to eating the pancakes quickly, seeing as school started in 25 minutes.
She finished in 5 minutes, and picked up her bag by the stairs. Luhan had already gone upstairs and now came down, dressed in casual wear – a dark blue cardigan over a grey v-neck and black jeans as well as a pair of dark sunglasses and a black mask. “I’ll take you to school,” he offered, keys jangling in his hand.
Jiyoon rolled her eyes and accepting grudgingly, secretly glad for a day without her running to school. Fine, I’ll accept! But I wonder how he’s taking me to school? She hadn’t seen any car parked outside of her house or any that was nearby.
She bade goodbye to her parents and put on her black school shoes. Luhan waited outside patiently, and still looked like the idol he was with his disguise and dark red hair, standing there all suave and emitting an aura of calmness. He saw her close the door and walk up to him, so he took her left hand and started to walk.
Hand in hand, walking down the street like a couple. For once in her life, she was stumped on a situation. Her heart fluttered in her chest and she felt her cheeks heat up rapidly. Using her other hand, she patted her cheek and huffed. Luhan watched from the corner of his eye and Jiyoon tried to cool her flaming cheeks.
“Here,” Luhan gestured and it seemed they had arrived at a car that had appeared from nowhere.
“Huh? I didn’t see this here yesterday,” she blurted. Luhan chuckled again and opened the passenger door for her.
The whole ride to school was quiet. As well as awkward. Every now and then, Jiyoon peeked a glance at Luhan who stared straight ahead at the road, concentrating on his driving. He was still wearing his disguise. Inside?! She fiddled with the seatbelt and couldn’t help but feel too close to this idol. Why in the world is he with me? Why me? There are prettier, better, smarter girls out here right? I’m only plain and average. She glanced at Luhan again and she caught him staring at her, the affection and delight glittering in his eyes. They had stopped at a red light and the moment broke when he smiled before turning back to the road as the lights turned green.
In what felt like a thousand years, they finally reached her high school – Gwangmyeong (광명) High School. As soon as the car stopped in front of the school, Jiyoon muttered a goodbye and stepped from the car, closing the door and walking away quickly. She didn’t want people to see her with such a famous idol. No way.
