Outside the dominating roman walls of Deva sat the amphitheatre, rising proudly from the surrounding flat. Within the circle the soldiers of the legion were already training in combat, for though safe they were within the walls of Deva, the wild of Wales was not so far away and a constant hum of a threat could be heard, though not as loudly as the laugh of the centurions.
Juan hopped over the seats of the amphitheatre, spear in hand jabbing at the women who trying to pull him down, the usual Saturday morning jostle to see who he would bed that night.
"Aim for his toes!" Albus shouted laughing merrily as Juan wobbled and dropped his spear, his only defence. "He likes it rough ladies, try harder."
"Shut it Al!" he shouted back, distracted long enough for the regular to grab his ankle and send him flying. "Ah Daisy, how are you my dear?"
"Alright now I've got a warm bed tonight." She winked bending down and capturing his lips in a harsh, passionate kiss. "See you later."
"Happy?" Albus asked lifting the dummy back onto the stand as he tossed Juan his spear again. "Now, try and hit it."
"Or you?" Juan smirked tossing the spear from hand to hand. "How do you think Blandus spent his first night as a married man?"
"I don't wanna know; I don't wanna think about what may have happened." He grunted pulling the spear from the dummy to take his turn.
"She was rather nice wasn't she?" Juan smirked, "Just your type as well, petit with a sharp tongue."
"Don't remind me." Albus stated, "Blandus always got one up on me, no matter what it was."
"But you're now only one title beneath him." Juan added pulling a dagger from his belt and threw for the head. "And we all know how much he hates that, and that the men do as you tell them."
"That's because we're one of them." Albus shrugged. "Nothing more."
"Bullshit and you know it; we're just nicer than him." Juan smirked, "and here comes the lovely new addition."
Both men turned and watched as Esma was dragged into the middle of the amphitheatre, winding through the men as they trained, by Blandus who looked more than a little impatient. Albus noticed her steps were short and quick, completely different to the way she was walking the day before.
"I'll never understand him, he's too Roman." Juan sighed seconds before they reached them. "Sir."
"Look after her for the day; I've got better things to do." Blandus stated pushing her forwards into them before turning on his heel and disappearing out of sight.
"Good morning." She smiled looking nervously up at them. "Don't mind me, I'll just find a seat."
"Want a go?" Albus asked, noticing the way her eyes lingered on the blade in his hand.
"Really?" she asked as a light emitted from her green eyes.
Juan took a huge step back as Albus handed her the small blade, she grinned up at him causing a small smile to press onto his face as he watched her aim and throw.
"Impressive." Another man laughed coming over and passing Esma the knife back, "You're Blandus' bride?"
"That'd be me." She smiled taking the knife and hitting the dummy between the eyes.
"I'd be scared if I were in his shoes." He grinned, "Being a good guard dog Octavius?"
"Say it again Maximus and you'll be limping for three weeks." Albus growled feeling someone take the sword from his hand as glared at the younger soldier. "Remember who I am and take yourself elsewhere."
Juan pulled Esma back as tension built up around the men, she looked at Albus and frowned shaking her head. All men were the same really, let a woman show off and then start a fight.
"Come with me doll, I'll show you round while the men fight." A woman with pitch black hair laughed from the other side of Juan, "He knows where to find me if you get hurt, don't worry."
"Alright." Esma smiled as Juan nodded his consent. "Esma."
"Daisy." She grinned, "How was your first night with the captain?"
"Does it always hurt so much?" she whispered needing to know, "The women said it would the first time, but I'm scared."
Daisy frowned and quickly ran back to her home and shut the doors behind her, "Esma, tell me . . . I know this is strange but where?"
"Where did he?" Esma asked nodding her end and pointing her fingers in an upwards motion, Daisy nodded biting her lower lip. "Not from where the monthly bleeds come from."
"I'm so sorry." She whispered sitting down and clutching Esma's hands, "Blandus, well how do I put this nicely?"
"Just say it, I don't care." Esma whispered eager to hear, but dreading the outcome.
"Well he prefers men and that's how they pleasure one another." Daisy sighed turning to her small set of draws against the far wall. "If he comes for you again tonight, apply this, it'll make things easier."
"Thank you." Esma smiled putting the small jar, which looked as though it contained some sort of wax, into her bag.
"Good, now we're too intimately friends. I'll take you down to the river, it's beautiful." Daisy grinned linking an arm through hers, "I have a feeling we're going to be good friends."
"Me too, it'll be nice to have a true friend." Esma grinned letting Daisy pull her into a short run down past the amphitheatre and temple, towards the river.
