It has been a week since we moved in this cottage. It was very peaceful outside and quite silent except the chirping of birds and sound of breeze. However, Inside the house it was deadly boring cause Sal was not very talkative. He became someone who is serious all the time like my father used to be, a workaholic. How I regretted not to bring any books and besides we didn't have a TV to kill time either. I spent most of my days walking around, collecting wood for the fire we lit every night because it gets cold unlike during the day where sun shines brightly and warms the surface of the mother earth.
I finished my wandering around and went back to cottage to prepare some snacks for lunch. Sal was on his phone again speaking Italian. I shook my head for not understanding a word of it and got on my business. As soon as I finished the sandwiches I sat on the counter and took a bite while watching Sal approaching the front door. I raised my eyebrows questioningly but received a grin from him which was odd since he was sulky for the last couple of days. He opened the door and hugged somebody which caused me to choke on my food. I dropped my sandwich on the plate and ran to the person I was so longing to see.
He let go of Sal and turned to face me with open arms inviting to hug him which I unhesitatingly fulfilled. He hugged me tight. I could feel all of his body relaxing with mine in warmth. I buried my face in his neck inhaling his scent. I missed him so much. Call me masochist but I didn't care whether he was my tormentor or my possessor at that instant cause I was his and he was mine.
He was the first to loosen his arms and pulled away. We were nose to nose staring each other. He caressed my face, my hair again and again while I admired his chiseled face. Then he suddenly put his lips on mine and kissed me fervently which melted me causing my knees to wobble so I hanged on him with my arms around his neck and reciprocated passionately.
We separated breathlessly and stared each other again.
"I missed you" he murmured. I only nodded my head in return. He wiped my tear which I was not aware that I shed with his thumb and let go of me slowly.
"How are you two hanging?" he asked with a mischievous look in his eyes which caused me to smile.
"You know like an old couple whose libido diminished within years" Sal chuckled which earned a glare from Damien.
"He is more like a grumpy old man, sulking all the time" I said while smacking Sal's arm playfully which caused Damien to glare at me this time.
"So you two get along very well then I should be going back to somewhere I am much more needed" he sounded angry.
"Oh C'mon Damien don't be a grouchy man and kill the mood, you know we are only joking out of boredom." Sal whined.
Damien took off his jacket and put it on the back of the chair near the couch and undid his tie and collar buttons and rolled the sleeves upwards revealing his perfectly toned forearms. He sat on the couch and sighed heavily and held his hand towards me gesturing to sit beside him. I obeyed his wish and sat near him. He pulled me in closer to his body. I slackenedin his warm embrace.
"Are you hungry?" I asked like a concerned wife.
"I ate on the road." He looked tired and it worried me.
"Do you wanna lay down? You look tired."
"No I am fine with you here." he sighed.
"Damien"
"Huh?"
I was not sure to ask the questions whirling inside my brain but I had to know.
"What is it going to be?" I paused to check his reaction which was not changed a little that gave me more courage to continue. "Are we safe? Will they come after us? The Russians I mean."
"We are safe for now, no worries doll face." his voice didn't convince me much.
"Why are they after me?"
"Babe they are not totally after you. You are just a bail."
"If I am not what they really want then why didn't they simply take you down instead of chasing me?" I realized that I was walking on the thin ice when I sensed Damien stiffened beside me.
"They can't take me or my men so easily. They are not stupid enough to drag a war on streets where FBI and ATF are roaming around. They cannot afford a battle risking to be caught and jailed." He took the glass Sal handed and sipped the bourbon. "You are however someone weak and vulnerable and precious to me." Hearing those words spilling from his lips gave a joy to my heart confirming how much he cared about me.
He finished his drink and leaned forward to put it on the coffee table bringing me with himself awkwardly so I giggled. He looked at me questioningly.
"How is this funny doll face?" he raised his eyebrows and smirked. It was a look I adored to see on his face. I instinctively held his face between my hands and smiled at him whispering mostly to myself. "I missed that look"
He smiled back holding my hands. "Go on" I demanded. He smirked again for my boldness.
"Well, they want you so that they use you as a bait to bring me down because they know that I will come after you. Yet this is not the only reason they want you." he paused to grab the glass once again which was filled by Sal. "The woman that I was obliged to marry in order to gain the trust of those scumbags had come out to be a little crazy possessive."
"A little?" I nudged his arm grinning like an idiot, loving every civilized moment that I spent with Damien.
"Okay she is over crazy" he chuckled which sent shivers to my body. "And she wants you dead. That is why we have to protect you until we kill those bastards one by one"
He was speaking cold bloodedly about killing someone. The thought alone terrified me but I had no saying in that matter cause if they are not dead I'll be the one in a coffin at the end.
I nodded understandingly and hugged him again, afraid to lose only thing that was left in my life.
"Just promise me one thing" he whispered low enough to make sure I am the one who hears his words. "When things get going tough and if you somehow end up in their hands which I won't let it happen, please never give up on me. I will come for you wherever you are and save you. Don't do anything stupid." I was very aware what he was talking about but was not sure about myself. However never seeing Damien again put fear in my heart I was really weak not to give up. I've been there, couldn't do it. But I was alone then and now I have him. Cause he is mine.
I nodded and whispered back.
"I promise" his hold tightened and I heard him exhale in relaxation.
"Thank you" he murmured.
"I love you" I said inside my head and kissed him on the neck.
