Double Life

As usual I'm not very excited for school. The main reason I go is to see Riley and well because I have to, but today guilt consumes me as I climb up the fire escape.

I'm one level bellow Riley's window. Its not my fault, he called I didn't make him or ask him and I couldn't turn him down imagine what people would have said

The sound of singing begins to fill the open air. This voice is what made me climb through that open window years ago. I was attracted to it because I myself liked to sing but I had never had a partner or sang with someone else, apart from my mother and when Kermit left she stopped.

I release what song she's singing and my blood goes cold.

I wrote those lyrics about Lucas. Suddenly I stumble a bit. I put my hand out and steady myself making a loud bang as my hand hits the metal. Crap.
The singing stops.

"Maya?" Riley's voice coos "Maya what are you doing just sitting there. Come on up." I climb up the last bit and crawl in through the window. I sit next to Riley on the bay window. She's sat there her hands placed perfectly in her lap as usual.

"I was just admiring the sound." I say.

"I love that song. Can you believe Sabrina wrote that, she's our age and she got such a talent." Riley says turning to me. I don't think she knows about the date...yet!

"Yeah." I say.

"Peaches? Is something bothering you again?"
God I hate that she can read me so easily.

"Nothing...apart from the fact that's its our first day back at school"

"This is gonna be an amazing term don't you think."

I roll my eyes "I'll believe that when it happens."

"All right let's get going." She turns and get ready to crawl behind me.

"Do we have to?" I whine sticking out my bottom lip.

"Yes now move it." Riley's contagious laugh fills my head. I laugh with her and turn, crawl out the window. Maybe Riley's right I can get through this year and hopefully Sabrina's.

"I love you riles, remember that." I say after she crawls out.

"I know that silly." She rolls her eyes. "Thunder" she reaches her hand out to me.

"Lighting." I say back clasping her hand.
