It was another day of hell as Rick Grimes ordered everyone their daily tasks.
"Carol, Michonne, I want you two to keep watch of the walkers an' make sure none of 'em get in. Glenn an' Maggie, I need you to go on a run for some supplies, whatever you can find. Hershel, Beth, and Carl, I want you to stay with Judith as always."
"But dad, Carl piped while looking up at his father, I can go with you." Rick shook his head.
"No. That ain't an option." Rick bent down on one knee and put a hand on his son's shoulder. "I need you to protect your little sister and the others if something goes wrong." Rick's eyes gleamed with pride. "Can ya do that for me?" Carl solemnly nodded his head."And what 'bout me?" Daryl stepped forward, his crossbow held in one hand while the other held an arrow.
"I didn't forget." Rick replied. "I was gon' go 'round the prison. Lookin' for any signs of walkers." Rick took out his gun and motioned down the hallway. Daryl nodded and followed after him while the others scattered to do their own tasks. The walk was getting awkward. No one spoke and there was no walkers to be found. Daryl cleared his throat to speak.
"Don't seem like there's anythin' here."
Rick stopped himself in his tracks and stared Daryl in the eye. Both of the two men knew why the other was doing this. Rick needed some air. Like relief. And someone to talk to. When it seemed like the tables couldn't turn and rotate themselves anymore it was just Rick. Alone. All by himself. How would any man want to live like that for the rest of their god damn life? But he never said anything, not even when he really needed it. And Daryl could see right through him.Rick blinked and without warning, he slumped down on the floor while leaning up against the wall. Alarmed, Daryl got on his knees and gently shook Rick's shoulder. "Hey man what the hell is wrong with ya? You alright?" Rick nodded and put a hand up on his forehead to rub his temples. "Course."
Daryl gave his friend a look of doubt. "Don't seem like it."
Rick looked away while Daryl took a seat next to the former sheriff."Things have been really tough, I know." Daryl glanced up at Rick to see if he would show any emotion to his words, of course he didn't. Daryl continued. "We've lost lots of people. But we have to keep goin' and stay strong."
Daryl swung his arm around Rick's neck. Rick again, just nodded. "You're right but how can we be so sure?" Rick's question began to make Daryl question himself as well. But the only honest answer he could possibly give his friend was a simple shrug. Rick glared at the ground. Daryl knew all of Rick's hopes were gone, but he at least wanted to try to make his friend feel better.
"Aw, comon man. At least cheer up a little bit. You're startin' to remind me of my brother when he hasn't had anythin' to drink in a week."
Rick glanced at Daryl and flashed him a quick smile while going back to the ground. "An' you take after your brother, A LOT."
Daryl smirked. "Ay, don't go comparin' me an' my brother. We ain't nothin' alike."
Rick chortled.
"Sure."
Daryl let go of Rick and playfully punched his arm. Rick looked back at him and broke down in laughter. Daryl grinned while he stared at the plain prison walls. When Rick finished his giggle fit, he looked at his friend sincerely. "I'm happy we're friends, Daryl."
"Yeah an' let's not forget all those times you pointed a gun in my face, too." Rick gave Daryl a stern look. "But I never shot you. Ya oughta be thankful for that. And at the time, that was when ya seemed like a threat." Daryl rolled his eyes. Sitting there for a moment, he had something In mind. Leaning over, Daryl planted a soft kiss on Rick's lips. Rick looked stunned and shocked. When Daryl pulled away Rick pulled him back forward and began passionately kissing back. Daryl's breathing sped up and got heavier by the second while he brought his hands up to Rick's face as he began to position himself on Rick's lap. After a minute both men slowly separated. Chests heaving and out of breath. Daryl let himself rest against Rick as he finally managed to say the last few words he'd been wanting to say since the beginning. "That was the most messed up thing I'd ever done.""Shut up."
