Rick awoke to a surprisingly warm day of winter. He sighed gazing out his window. "Five more days, Rick. Five more days and it'll be spring."
He reluctantly dragged himself out of bed nearly falling down the stairs in the process of heading to the kitchen, and made himself a bowl of cereal. He felt so drowsy but he knew he wouldn't be able to go back to sleep for ages. Putting the bowl away and getting properly dressed, Rick raced outside for some fresh air. He wandered to an empty field surrounded by trees. He scanned the area when he felt someone tap his shoulder."S' 'bout damn time. I was jus' 'bout to leave."
Rick spun around to see his friend had snuck up on him. He relaxed soon after. "God, don't do that Daryl!"
The little kid shrugged without a care. "Sorry ya scare so easily.""Whatever."
The two boys walked around the grassy area for who knows how long. Talking, and catching up on their daily lives. It was almost as if they were adults. There were times when Rick wanted to hold Daryl's hand so badly, but he knew that wasn't an option. He didn't know Daryl's sexuality, much less his own. His thoughts were intterupted when he noticed Daryl racing off into the trees.
"Hey! Weren't we just having a conversation a moment ago??" Rick hollered racing off to catch up to his friend. The thick bushes and tall trees were everywhere. Rick looked back and forth. Side to side. No Daryl.
"What's up?" Daryl called down sitting in a tree. Rick looked up. The early Sunlight slipping through the branches causing him to squint as he looked up at the boy. Rick sighed in annoyance. "The sky."
Daryl frowned. "Damn, Grimes. You're no fun."
Rick stepped closer to the tree. "Comon Daryl, get down. I don't need ya fallin'."
Daryl turned his head away in embarrassment. Rick stared at him expectantly. "Daryl-"
"NO."Rick felt startled by Daryl's tone, but still kept his patience.
"An' why not?" Daryl shook his head in rejection, still not answering. Rick pushed out his lips in a pout when Daryl began to whisper nonsense.
"What?" Rick yelled.
"I can't get down!" Daryl exclaimed back.
Rick's eyes widened in shock. "Then why'd ya climb up there in the first place!?"
"Ain't tellin'!"
Rick closed his eyes taking a deep breath to relax before he nearly gave a lecture on "why you shouldn't do stupid shit if can't manage it yourself by the the end of the day." Getting a grip on the nearest branch, Rick made his way up till he was standing in the same branch as Daryl's.
"Aye! Yer gonna make us fall!" Daryl complained. Rick stubbornly sat down anyway. "Why can't you get down?" Rick questioned again. Daryl gave a side glare while swinging his feet back and forth in nervousness.
"I climb up here often at night." Daryl hesitated. "To look at the stars."
Rick smiled softly happy his friend's life wasn't always so miserable. However, the same question still remained. "Why are you so afraid to get down?""Because once I step on the ground again, it reminds me that I have to go home. And then my father..."
Rick stopped him, aware of the strong terrible memories it brought to his friend whenever he mentioned him. "I get it. Totally fine. But it's not night time. We're at the startin' of mornin'." The words spilled out of Daryl's mouth faster than Rick could comprehend.
"I just wanted to come up here for some strange reason. And 'm scared of heights so once I climb up, I can't get down till either Merle comes an' finds me by accident, or I just jump down."
Rick looked terrified. "Daryl, ya gotta be kiddin' me. How high do ya climb!?" Daryl gave a tense shrug. " 'Bout from here, or higher." Rick looked down below them. From where they were at, they were at least 15 feet high.
"Nah. Nuh-uh. Nope." Rick mumbled as he reached over to Daryl pressing him close to his chest. "What're ya doin'!?" Daryl yelled clinging to Rick like a scared cat.
"We're gettin' down. NOW." Rick took Daryl off the branch and began to climb back down. "Rick!" Daryl whined loudly.
"Damn it Daryl, stop squirmin'!" Rick was about to take another step to the lowest branch down, when he lost his footing. Daryl clung on tighter than before as the two kids were being thrown branch to branch until they reached the cold hard earth. Rick groaned in pain noticing Daryl had his face buried in his chest. Slowly rising his head up, Daryl looked around and saw that Rick had taken the fall for him. Daryl pinched his hand over Rick's face squeezing his cheeks. "Fuck, Rick. That was was pretty Damn stupid."Rick opened his eyes as he was met with Daryl's face being so close to his. "Thanks, 'm fine." Rick murmured sarcastically. He tried to get up, but the pain his back took impacted his physical movements. "Ya need ta be more careful." Daryl whispered helping Rick up. Rick shook his head and leaned over to kiss Daryl softly on the lips.
"Wha-what are ya, a fuckin' fairy?" Daryl stammered. Rick sighed even though when he kissed Daryl, the boy didn't pull back.
"Ain't Christian that's fer sure."
Daryl's eyes softened. "Me neither. He replied staring at his feet. He forced his eyes to look up back into Rick's."Meet me here when the stars are out tonight?"
Rick couldn't wipe the smile that curved his lips. "You bet."Alrighty. So I have two stories I'd like to write. (Not one shots for a change ^^) One is another child AU for Rickyl that's already written out. And the other still needs more thought and time to be done. (Of course it's more Rickyl, because I'm trash😂) Those are just some things I wanted to say just in case you guys want to comment in weather you're interested in reading my garbage, or have something WAY better to do. Once again, thank you so much for reading!
