I leaned back in my seat, propping my feet up on the cool, shiny black dashboard of Kenny's car, and turned the radio up. Sounds of "The Lazy Song" played through the speakers as we drove along the express way. I played  with Kenny's fingers that were already wrapped in mine, snaking each finger through the large gaps between his.

"If I'm all you want, Ken," I started, "why didn't you make a move, or something.. I don't know, you didn't make it obvious at all.." I continued, feeling as though I was yammering on aimlessly.

He looked over, his clear blue eyes looking into mine as we stopped at a light that had just turned red.

"I knew you weren't over Nick. I didn't want to take advantage of that, you needed time, and as far as I was concerned, I could wait a lifetime." He said, smiling at his own answer. He was such a corn ball, always had been.

His eyes turned back to the road when the light switched to green, and we were driving again.

"Where are we going, Mr. Adventurer?" I asked, still fiddling with his hand, his fingers nearly engulfing mine.

"You'll seeeee" he sing-songed with the beat of the radio.

I couldn't help but smile, it felt so comfortable being with Kenny, anywhere we were, until I looked up at the road ahead and my smile faded.

The lights flashed as I screamed out his name over and over, the policeman still holding me back. By now, the tears were puring down my face, it was all I could do.

I felt so helpless, looking around, I saw people, but their faces were a blur as they pulled Nick out of the collapse -d truck.

He looked so pale, his face scratched, with dirt spread over his left cheek.

I felt a pang in my stomach, and as they carried him away on a stretcher, my screams turned into white noise.

"What's wrong?" Kenny asked, noticing the way I tightened my grip around his hand.

I looked up at him, and then towards the road ahead, "this is where it happened." I said, flat and dry, barely able to get the words out of my mouth.

"This is where he died." I added, sighing deeply, and he held my hand tighter as we continued down the road.. The road that seemed to never end.
