My family was unpredictable and amazing. My mom was stay at home, and my dad worked a boring 9-5 job, but we had a great childhood. Back then, I did not know what my family was apart of, but now I think I'm better off knowing.
My brother knew before me. We are from France, and apparently my family is very powerful. This was unbeknownst to me until my brother made my family tell me. My mother and father worked for a secret government program that was used to hunt down suspected terrorists and make their deaths look accidental. My dad tracked the target, and when the job was done, my mom would hack records to make the death look accidental.
My brother was not on board when he first found out, but then he became very invested. He also had a super sweet girlfriend, but it would be too dangerous to tell her what was happening.
After he met her, he promised he would only do one more mission. This mission made him go into the field to physically eliminate the target, but he already said yes before he knew, so he had to do it.
After waiting for him for hours to get home we got a phone call. He said he was caught, but escaped. Since the target had too many resources, he fled from France to save us. We were so lucky he was okay because it meant we could see him eventually. Right before he got on his plane, his car was run off the road, and the police refused to look more into it because he was just a kid fooling around and it went bad.
No one believed this, but we couldn't tell the police what he was really apart of. After grieving for months, my family finally decided we were quitting for good. The program was not on board with that. We could have a year off, and then we had to start again. This time my parents would stay behind screens.
My new life started when I permanently decided not to go into the same business my parents were in. I was a straight A student and decided to go to a pretty good school, even though I wanted to lay low. I decided on University of California because I needed some sun and some guys.
Now:
I also wanted to be far from home. It wasn't because I didn't want to be by my family, but more because of my brother. I had too many memories of him there. Every time I saw my dad's bright green eyes, I could swear I was looking at my brother's. I wanted to get a fresh start, and apparently if you want to have a good time, California's the place.
University of California wasn't that hard to get into because my school's back in France were much more demanding. I had already learned 3 languages; French (my birth language), by four I was learning English, and by six, I could learn any language, so I chose Spanish because it was fairly simple. Apparently in America, this was impressive.
I knew I would have no trouble making friends because my personality was sweet, but if I needed to, I could be a bad-ass.
I went to the registration desk and said, "Hello, my name is Alexandria Moreau." She quickly scanned her list and said she didn't see my name. So I reminded her that I am from France, so I may have accidentally been put under foreign exchange even though I've lived here for a few months with a permanent visa. She looked again and found my package.
I decided to go find my room by myself and take a tour later. I walked across the hot campus and immediately regretting not wearing my cut-off shorts and a tank top. I stepped in front of my new home. This is where I would be for the next couple of years, and I could get stuck with a great roommate or a terrible one.
When I finally found my room, I opened the door and the first thing I see is too many posters and dark bed sheets and I close my eyes and almost hope I open them to see unicorns. I've had enough darkness in my past, I did not need some raging goth who thought their life was hard because mommy and daddy wouldn't buy them a third car. I turned around and I was shocked.
The most handsome guy I've ever seen before was standing right in front of me. As soon as my heart began to expand with excitement, it deflated even faster. He must be looking for my roommate who was most likely his girlfriend.
He sat on the opposite bed as I unpacked my stuff. I could feel him staring at me so I turned around and snapped at him, "What are you looking at!". He sat there a little stunned and replies, "Just the most most beautiful girl I've ever seen." and winked.
I glared at him until he turned serious.
"What?" he asked.
I said, "Aren't you waiting for your girlfriend?"
"WOW. No!", and he laid on the bed laughing until tears came out of his eyes, which made me even more upset. A girl about my height with long blonde hair and a big smile came running in, and apologized for being late. The girl had beautifully pin-straight hair, and the boy had darker hair, but still blond, and it was curly and unruly. She asked what he was doing, and he said, "She thinks we're dating." After a few seconds they are both standing there laughing at me. I sit down feeling defeated because I've already made a bad impression on this nice girl and her friend.
"Hi, my name is Caroline, but you can call me Care, and this is my brother James Garrison. We're fraternal twins that got accepted here."
I shook both of their hands and introduced myself as Dri because it made me seem more American. I knew they could tell by my accent that I was French, but it felt good to fit in as an American.
I found out that James plays in a band, and that is why it looks like someone went boy-crazy in our room. He wants her to "advertise". After getting to know them, I felt really lucky because I almost believed I would get stuck with some mean girl who wouldn't want to hang out.
I went back to the dorms with them, and we parted our ways at Care and I's room. We decided to meet in the morning for breakfast, and to plan our first college party, so we could mingle. I got under my covers and looked up at my glow in the dark stars, and almost wanted to pack and go home.
