It was a long drive from here to wherever April's parents were going to "surprise" her. It was quite miserable in the back seat. Although she had the whole back seat to herself, it wasn't comfortable due to all the spare luggage tucked on the seats. April was tired and couldn't sleep at all. She wanted to go back. Back to her friendly neighbors. Back to Isabell. Back where she belonged.
She put her head on the seat and leaned back closing her eyes trying to stop them from watering. She opened her eyes again and they trailed to some luggage on the seat filled with her safety clothes. She had always wondered why her parents or mostly just her mom wanted her to wear these clothes?
It all started when she was eight years old. April had come home from school to find her cousin, Brendon the only one in the house. She asked him why he was here and where her parents were. He had told her that April's mother had put him in charge because he was older. 18 in fact. He still hadn't answered her question though so she asked again sternly this time. Brendon just shook his head slowly and had almost a sad look on his face. He said they were off shopping. Of course i didn't believe him. Instead i just nodded and ran upstairs realizing i would have to figure this out my self.
When I had come into my room, there sitting on my bed was a grocery bag. i opened it and inside were oversized gloves, pants, shirts, jackets, and many more layers of clothing. I was very confused. What is happening she had thought over and over letting those words walk back and forth across her mind. What is happening? When her parents came home she had asked them about the clothes they said it was to make sure she was safe and comfortable. She had believed it her whole life.
She turned her head away not wanting to remember any memories of home. Cecil was asleep on the floor of the car. She wondered if he would ever miss home or even remembered it. It was too much and April couldn't hold it in any longer. Slow long tears strolled down her face. She wiped on her sleeve and sniffed. Maybe the story that her mom had told her would be true. The story about how some people were depressed and just could never be happy again. How everyday would be blue to them and every night would be cold. Her mom had told her that this happened to many people and even most of the time, it would affect their lives forever and the sadness would last forever and ever. April knew it. She knew that she would be one of those people just starting from today. Until forever.
