Chap 24: Facing The Dark
The restaurant was in fact, fancy.
Each bronze table had four seats, Cole and Maddy shared the table Gabe and I sat on. The solemn rules of this restaurant wouldn't content moving tables and Cole would of been anxious if he had to be alone with Maddy.
There was no emptiness existent in this vast room. Tables and chairs were placed over every visible tile and draped over the golden cement walls were midnight silk curtains.
"What are you ordering?" Maddy asks accompanying the seat beside me.
"The spaghetti and sauce, maybe. You?" I reply, vaguely. Fixing my loose, baby pink dress as I sit.
"So you and Gabe can eat like Dalmatians?" She chuckles, "I think the special, spiced rings."
"And wh-" I halt, thinking that a joke involving Cole and her would lead to awkwardness.
Lately, the way Maddy has been acting is making it really hard to believe the past i've been told.
"Very funny." I stick out my tongue, insolently, forgetting that we're in one of the fanciest restaurants in America.
Gabe and Cole return with a good looking waiter in a smug sought of way, with tan blonde hair, dressed in a bow tie and matching black blazer.
"Have you decided on your orders?" The waiter asks formally, his voice charged and bothered.
What have these boys done to him now?
I glance at Gabe in his shirt and jeans and then Cole, both their faces flickered a proud smile.
"Can I get the spaghetti and sauce, and a cocktail please?" I ask amiably, hopeful to make up for whatever has been done.
"What cocktail, mam'? He ask, making me giggle.
"Whatever you think is best."
Maddy talks and then he leaves with our orders written on a small notebook.
"So, what did you boys do?" Maddy asks the words we both thought.
"Oh nothing, he was taking too long to come. Oh, and he was checking you girls out." Cole answers, a cheeky grin plastered across his face.
Maddy and I share an aghast glance.
"Oh, and what did you do to him?" Reluctantly, I turn back to Cole.
"Just gave him a little talk, he won't be looking at you two any longer." Gabe answers his award winning smirk taking up half his face.
I wonder if they saw the smile he gave me earlier?
"Um, you do realise i'm single, right? I can date who I like." Maddy interrupts, amused as she looks directly at Cole's golden-brown eyes.
"But not a waiter." Cole replies suddenly nervous.
"He could be nice." She replies, enjoying herself.
"He wasn't. Anyway, I need to tell you four something." Cole says, abruptly.
"What is it?" I ask when he doesn't continue.
"Well," his voice is quiet "it's about me and Maggie... we uh, broke up." He covers his face with his hands. "She dumped me."
A sob is heard through his hands.
(I'M SORRY MAGGIE, PLEASE FORGIVE ME.)
"Oh, Cole. I'm so sorry." I can't help but think about how different Cole is from when we first met, or how different he was before I got to know him.
