She run through the crowded hall grinning but couldn't find the one she looked for to share her happiness.
"Kade!" She screamed as she noticed a familiar figure talking to the guests.
"Yeah?" He turned around just in time to catch her in his arms.
"It's time!" She exclaimed.
"Time for what, baby?" He looked at her confused."For the announcement." She whispered back into his ear.
"Yeah, about that. I think we should talk about this once." He put her down, and held her hands in his. His lover, two years junior to him was elated to have been gifted with an engagement ring which wasn't even meant to be for her.The ring was bought for his boss's girlfriend and was with him for safekeeping. But, a girl of twenty four seemed so lovestruck that he didn't know how to break it to her.
Not that he didn't want to, he really surely did want to marry her someday. But that wasn't now. It was all too soon. Her heart beated fast as she saw the look in his eyes. He was backing out, out of their future marriage.
"What ever do you what to talk about?" She asked, taking a few steps forward."Us. You and I. All this." He stated. Pulling her out of the hall into a balcony.
"Do you not want this anymore?" She enquired."I do. The thing I've been meaning to tell you is- that ring, that ring isn't mine."
"What?" She exclaimed as she processed the new information.
"Yes, it's actually my bosses. I was supposed to give it to him the day after you found it. Rafia, I love you, I really do. But isn't it too early?""Yo-You never wanted to marry me? Oh god, however did I make such a fool out of myself?" He took a step forward but froze as she held up a shivering hand and looked met his gaze with bloodshot eyes.
"It's my mistake. I understand." She simply said, pulling off the ring and placing it in his hand.
"Do convey my good wishes to couple." She walked away, creating distance between them, not just physically but mentally too.
The rest of the night she avoided him. And the moment he couldn't take it anymore, he knew what to do.
Rafia, though trying to ignore him, was still annoyed at his absence. She felt utterly embarrassed and knew it wasn't his fault and that he deserved none of her rude behaviour. But that was her only way to protect herself, she had dreamt too far into their marriage and now only cursed her amateur attitude. They were supposed to announce their engagement today, infront of her parents at their 25th anniversary celebration. Now that she thought about it, he never seemed to be too involved in her conversations of marriage nor had he ever actually asked her.
She had just assumed that a Tiffanys box in his pocket was meant to be for her and had jumped to conclusions.
The party was coming to an end when the lights went out.
"Rafia, honey, could you go ask Jack to turn on the generator?" Her mother pulled at her in the dark and asked.
"Yes, mom. I'll be right back." She masked her pained voice as she walked through the dark hall bumping into many.
But just as she was at the door a spot light fell on her along with Chasing cars by Snow Patrol playing. This was their song, Kade and hers."Rafia Belle Romaria, you are so breathtakingly brilliant." She stood stunned under the spot light as she saw only another person in the dark hall, the one holding the mic and walking towards her.
"You are everything good in my life, I can't sleep without a glimpse of your smile, without hearing your voice. The first day I saw you in a pink barbie frock eating a milkshake with a scowl on your eight year old face, I knew I was a goner. Who can't fall in love with you? Baby, I'm just lucky you chose me out of all the idiots falling at your feet." He was a few inches from her when he stopped.
Her eyes filled with tears as she too recalled the day when a boy a few years older than her spoke to her with utmost respect and importance. She was mesmerised just by that moment.
"Loving you has been the best thing I could ever come to experience. How the years passed by is beyond me and though I think forever would never be enough to be with you, would you be mine forever?" She gasped as she saw him kneel down and pull out a ring.
"Will you marry me, Beautiful? Will you be with me when I'm old and can't see anyone but you? Because, Rafia, I'll be with you till you no longer will have me. Please, say yes and be mine so we can take for-" She cut him off in between his speech pulling him into a kiss.
"You talk to much, Kade. Too much." She whispered as she planted kisses on his lips.
"Is that a yes then?"
"Make me yours forever and beyond."
