Mike's night was not going as he had planned a few months back. He couldn't take his mind off
the empty promises he made as he sat in the corner of the gym. Every time a slow song came
on, or any song for that matter, he wished he was out there with her. El. The only one he was
missing. But she was gone and he wasn't sure if he would ever get her back. The snowball was
not supposed to be on his agenda that day, yet Lucas, being as determined as he was, forced
Mike to go anyway, thinking it would be good for him. So far, it was the exact opposite. Terrible.
He would rather have been home sleeping in the makeshift bed he had made her, absorbing the
remaining breathers of her scent and seeing her in his dreams. Oh, those dreams. He loved
them so dearly, but they were never real enough. Suddenly, Mike's thoughts were disturbed by a
slight punch to his shoulder. Dustin. "Come on, man. It's over," he told him. Mike sighed of relief
in his mind. The snowball couldn't have ended soon enough. Mike's mom was waiting outside
and all the boys hopped into the car since they had come together. The air-conditioned car
was crisply cool compared to the hot air of the crowded gym. Mike's mom tried to engage in
simple conversation, but Mike was not any part of it. Leaning his head against the window, he
felt like he would fill the car with tears and his lips were already salty. He couldn't believe he had
gone without her. He couldn't believe he had broken that promise they made in that classroom.
Should I Stay or Should I Go started playing as they were passing by Mirkwood. So many
memories were attached to that hidden road and to that song Will loved so much.
Mike couldn't help but nod his head to the beat while the other boys had a full out jam session.
A minuscule smile slowly replaced his tears. He watched trees pass by slowly, but quickly, all at
once until something else came into vision.
"Mom stop the car," Mike shouted, sternly in a tone of voice he didn't even realize he could muster.
"Mike..." she started.
"Stop the car," he repeated and flung his door open to hop out without even caring.
Could it be? Was this what he had been waiting for all those months?
He stood outside the car watching as a frail looking figure grabbed items,
including eggos, out of a wooden box. The other boys seemed to be in shock
watching the situation play out. So much so, that they were struck in their car seats. And Karen
had shut her mouth entirely.
"El," Mike said softly, trying not to startle her.
A head of shoulder length hair turned around to reveal the face he knew so well. It was her. It was really her.
"Mike," Eleven responded, with the same volume, but maybe even softer.
He couldn't help but remember her saying his name the same way when Brenner was trying to take her away.
Tears trickled down her face, but that was nothing compared to Mike. He had started to full-on
sob. He ran to her and carefully wrapped his arms around her. She was cold from the night's
frigid breeze and in desperate need of a complete meal or two. The two held each other as if the
other had died. They were both so extensively afraid to lose each other again. They didn't
ever want to let go. At this point, the boys and his mom didn't really know what to do. They
didn't want to ruin the moment, but it was getting awfully late. Finally Lucas spoke up.
"Uh, Mike...I understand this is major...but we should probably get ourselves and Eleven home."
Mike gave Lucas a disappointed look and short nod over El's shoulder, but soon gave way. It
took a minute for El to be pried away and Mike was flooded with the thought that she truly
missed him as much as he missed her. But the important thing was that she was back.
And she wasn't gonna let anything take her away again without a fight.
