Jack stared at himself in the mirror. One eye, twitching and black in hue, darker than it had been. He squeezed them shut, them opened them again. It was normal again. Either this was from the sickness or his was imagining things. He turned on the faucet and splashed himself with cold water, drops getting into his already damp hair. He dried his face off with his towel and then hung it up to dry. He stepped back out of the bathroom and headed back to the kitchen.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"You okay, Seán?" Mark asked as Jack stepped back into the kitchen, fussing with his wet green mess of hair. Mark slid a burger off of the spatula and onto a bottom bun. He doused it in ketchup and dropped the top bun on top of it all. He set it in a plate and carried it over to the table along with a glass of water.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Just a little dizzy there for a second," Jack replied, speaking slightly faster than usual.
"Oh...okay. Grab a burger and some buns and whatever you want on it. Not much here, unfortunately. Just ketchup, mustard, and some pickles," Mark said, setting his plate down and sitting down.
"Yeah, that's fine," Jack said, repeated the process Mark had done, but adding mustard instead of ketchup.
"Amy'll be coming in a minute. She's out walking Chica," Mark said, taking a bite of his burger. He picked up a napkin and wiped the ketchup mess off his face. "I put a bit too much on here, whoops."
"Tastes great, Mark. Thanks for having me over," Jack said, taking a bit of his own burger.
"No problem," Mark replied after he swallowed. He took a drink of water before taking another bite. "Wish you could come over more. Busy schedules, though. I get it. Speaking of which, how long do you have videos for before you gotta record some more?"
"I'd say a few weeks. I plan ahead, just in case."
"Smart," Mark said. The front door opened. A happy ball of golden energy sprang in and started licking at the ketchup left over on Mark's face.
"Down, Chica!" Amy said. "She's super energized today, Mark. I had hoped the walk would calm her down."
"Guess that didn't happen," Mark laughed, pushing Chica down before tearing off a bit of hamburger and tossing it at her. She immediately gobbled it up and stared up at Mark, hoping for more, her tongue sticking out as she panted from the run.
"C'mere, Chica," Jack said, calling her over to pet her on the head.
"Don't feed her anything else, she's got her own food," Mark said. "Amy, there's burgers in the kitchen if you're hungry."
"Coolio," Amy replied, walking to the kitchen to grab one. She sat down and the trio ate in almost silence, broken only by Amy asking Jack some questions. Chica lay happily over Jack's feet, already snoring.
