Chapter 12

I woke up excited. Yeah, it's cos I realized Nina lives next door and the best part? Her window is opposite mine! I mean, if you had the love of your life this close, wouldn't you wake up excited like me?

I walked into the bathroom and did my morning rituals there. I got out after minutes and threw on some nice pair of jeans, a denim shirt to go and my boot. I was leaving my room when mom called out breakfast was ready.

"Be right down mom", I shouted in response.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror one more time then hurried down. I still wear my pair of glasses but I try to not wear them when I'm not reading. I want to be able to do without them once in a while.

"Morning mom" I said and kissed her cheek

"Morning son, you sleep well?"

"Yes mom" I replied with my grin that showed a slightly visible dimple.

I was eating pancakes and syrup for breakfast. While I was munching the delicacy, I looked through my phone for Nina's contact only to realise I hadn't asked for it. Wow, that's a priority on my to-do list for the day. I wanted to knock at her gate but she hadn't intro to me to her parents so I didn't go to knock. I walked to the bus stop and saw Nina.

"Look who showed up", she said.

"Good morning" I said smiling

"Good morning"

"How's your night? You slept well?" I asked

"Fine, very well. How bout you?"

"Same..."

The bus arrived and we boarded.

"Same here", I continued.

"Ok"

I wanted to talk more and break this uncomfortable silence but I was tongue tied. I opened my mouth to say something, anything but nothing came out. Not a sound. I kept my mouth shut till we were to alight. I let her alight first then I did closely behind her.

She gave me that killer smile and I could have sworn my heart was melting right there. We walked into the School and as we walked pass, the eyes of virtually every student present at the time moved with us. They're probably thinking we're seeing each other or something.

The bell thundered as I closed my locker. I looked over at Nina and then we walked to class. Caleb joined us soon after the class had begun.

Cafeteria

The new trio(Caleb, Nina and I) sat at a table to eat lunch. We were fast seen together most times. In class, cafeteria, walking, going home. When we're together, I find words more than when it's just Nina and I. It's like my courage sinks when I'm alone with her. I should really learn to make my courage swim when alone with her.

I actually thought of something during English class earlier. I had a feeling I should not drop the bomb of how I feel about her. I mean how she makes me feel. It'd be better to be close, I mean very close before I drop the bomb. That way, it'd be difficult to give me a 'no' to my proposal. Of course, not a wedding proposal. I want her to be my girlfriend. That was my theory. I didn't want to let Caleb in on it so I kept my move to myself.

After school, as usual, we were walking home together. Caleb got to his place leaving us on the way to ours.

"Did you know our windows are opposite one another?" I asked, catching her off guard.

"huh"

"Did you know our windows are opposite one another?"

"Oh, Yeah"

"I found out last night. When did you?"

"Well, a few days ago, you left your blind open. I opened mine and kinda saw you pulling ooofff your shiirt?" She said like she was asking a question.

I was seeing a cuter side of Nina. The way she spoke right now cracked me up in my head so much it affected my face. I had to laugh.

"why are you laughing heeey!?!"

"The way you said you saw me pulling off my shirt cracked me up"

"It wasn't funny. I closed my blind immediately."

"Would you like to meet tonight? I mean just stay up the roof to look at the stars."

I didn't understand her first expression then I quickly added

"Don't worry, I didn't me..."

"I'd love to. I was just wondering how you knew I love looking at the stars?"

I was smiling a lot.

"I'm not saying" I answered sticking my long tongue out.

We were probably out too long without moving cause I heard her front door open with her dad stepping out.

"Hey dad, you're back!"

"Yeah, I see you're too. Why aren't you coming in? Who's the dude?"

"Uhm, dad, this is Billy. He lives next door."

He walks down to us looking at me intently. He finally extends his hand and smiles

"Nice to meet you Billy. I'm Derek Gilbert, but you can call me Derek since you're Nina's friend"

"Nice to meet you too Mr Gilbert"

"It's Derek."

"Alright, Derek, my mom and I are sorry for not coming to say hello to the new neighbour. We've sorta been hands tied lately. We'd come around tonight maybe?"

"It's fine Billy, we'd be expecting you. But excuse me, you said your mom and you?"

"Yeah"

"Where's your dad?"

I looked at Nina and she spoke up

"Daaaaad"

"It's fine Nina. He's late" I said to Derek.

"Oh, I'm sorry about that. My wife, Nina's mother is late too"

"I'm sorry about that too Derek."

I looked at Derek in scrutiny now. I must admit, he had quite good features. Most like my dad. That makes him my mom's kinda man. The only obvious difference was his Grey eyes. My dad had blue ones.

I smiled at Derek and then Nina and Derek again

"See you both later in the evening" I said as I turned in the direction of my house and opened the front door.

As I stepped in, I saw my mom shift away from the window like she was caught doing something bad.

Oh shit! She can't be looking after Derek.

"Mom, when did you arrive?" I asked ignoring the fact that I caught her looking out the window, at Derek. I'm 95% sure she was at least else she wouldn't have that expression when she left the window.

"I was let off quite early today so I came in about an hour ago"

"Oh, that's cool. Uhm, we should pay a visit to the new neighbours this evening. I told Mr Gilbert we'd turn up to say hello"

"Alright, go on up and get down to assist me with cookies then."
