Twenty years later. A block of the city turned into horror. Shrieks and cries consumed the night. Men and women ran and stumbled over the mangled bodies of the New York police Department that trailed through the streets. Parts of brick buildings were pulverized into heaps of rubble. One structure looked like a person had been thrown through the building and the impact caused it to topple down. Militaristic gun fire, tanks blasting missiles, it was constant. One man though was driving a humming Volkswagen Bug through the chaos. His frighten partner scrunched up in the seat next to him. "Earl. What is this thing?" Ben said as he looked out the window with his blue eyes wobbling. It was a warzone outside. The corpses had missing limbs. Crimson painted the streets. Nothing had prepared him for this.
"I don't know, but we need to get pictures of this thing...Of this monster. " Earl said swerving around a mound of wreckage in the middle of the street. His little red bug scooted onto the side walk then back on the road. Ben rolled down his window, thinking the breeze would lift up his drowsy eyes. He had been woken up by a call four in the morning by Earl, the zealous reporter. His wavy hair fluttered in the wind but the smell of burnt flesh caused his stomach to heave and churn. He rolled up his window gagging.
"So what happened? Earl" Ben said yawning. Earl kept his eyes locked on
the road. They stopped at an untainted street with a red light at an intersection. Ben and Earl heard the roaring engines of tanks and camouflage hummers drive past, they drove slow enough for foot soldiers to walk alongside. The soldiers carried their M16s and RPGs. Ben moved his head on a pivot watching the army pass in front of them. His patience began to thin, Earl hadn't answered yet. "So what's happening? You've been following the story longer than I have." Ben asked. The long line of military ended and Earl slammed on the gas."About a week ago there was an incident in North Carolina." Earl jerked the wheel to the right going on a parallel road with which the military was on. "Reach back into my bag and grab the brown folder." Ben reached in and pulled it out opening it. It was full of photos." They headed toward a distant roar. "A bridge and several houses were destroyed but one of the houses had just a chunk missing, there was no trace of the chunk. It was just gone." Earl said, looking up as a missile whizzed toward the roar. There was ringing sound, an explosion, then the sound of buildings tumble.
"How?" Ben said. Earl glanced at Ben. Ben was new but eager to find a good story. This was their story. "I don't know. But there were several people that actually witnessed what happened on the Intercostal. But that's not even the good part. An old man was actually in between the two men fighting. I mean you can't call these two, real men. He said one looked like a shark and he was really tall and big." Ben looked through the photos. One photo was of the bridge with a gap in the middle and then the next photo of a sailboat lodged in a mass of ice. "How'd he looked like a shark, did he say?" Ben asked, his attention was on the sailboat photo. "He only said, that he had a big mouth full of sharp teeth and that his eyes were like a Great White. He also said that the other man caused a wave to swamp the boat then he froze it by touching it. The witness swam away on to the mainland. He said he saw the two men continue their fight in a hatchery. Then he said a black sphere appeared and sucked most of everything around it inside it."
They kept heading down 2nd avenue. Ben hadn't seen a person and there were no cars parked. "Who are the two men?" Ben asked. Earl sighed, wishing Ben had been along with him during the long investigation. "Well, the Shark man. We don't know, but the other guy. We do know. Their fight ended in a grocery, apparently the second man had worked there. His Name is Rylan Creed. As far as we know he was just some normal teenager."
Ben flipped to the next photo. It was of a Mercedes Benz, the roof was collapsed with an impression of a person. "People say it was that kid Rylan that fell on the car. But he didn't die. Well as the story goes, they were in the grocery store. But nobody saw what happened to the shark man. But a cop saw Rylan walk into a portal of some sort. Then he was gone. "Earl looked ahead, the lamp posts lit up the way and he could see the parallel roads about to converge into one. Stacks of skyscrapers blocked the view off both roads till the roads combined leaving a long stretch of open highway.
