"Why?" I ask as my phone rings and I stir out of my slumber. I pick up the phone and see Kayden's face on the screen, so I answer the call."What do you want?" I grumble as I get up and hear my two younger siblings screaming at each other in the next room over.
"Well good morning to you too," Kayden laughs at my grumpiness and I growl in response. As you can already tell, I'm not a morning person.
"Get to the point, Kayden," I order my best friend and he just laughs some more.
"Fine. But you have to get up first," he bargains and I groan.
"Do I have to? It's Sunday Kayden!" I whine and he scoffs.
"It's 12:30 in the afternoon Amara. Get up already," he orders me and a groan escapes my lips again. I could practically hear him rolling his eyes at me through the phone.
"I know you just rolled your eyes at me," I say as I sit up in my bed and slide out from under the covers.
"Maybe I did maybe I didn't. You will never know," he says spookily and I laugh.
"That did not sound spooky at all, you do realize that, right?" I say as head towards my closet and hear one of the twins scream at the top of their lungs.
"Jesus christ, was that one of the twins?" Kayden asks, he could probably hear their screaming through the phone.
"With that high pitch of a scream, I'm guessing it was Lily. Not Trip," I give my guess and sure enough, Lily comes raging through the door with her cowgirl boots and fancy princess dress on and a huge stain spilled down the center.
Lily and Trip were my only other siblings and they were twins. Lily looked like a miniature version of me and Trip looked like a mini version of my Father. And they were six years old so they were going through the phase of "I wanna be different than him/her". So they were bickering more than ever. It's literally day and night arguing.
"He did it on purpose!" Lily squeals in anger and I couldn't help but snicker. Her voice got so squeaky when she was angry.
"I'm gonna let you go deal with that. You better meet me at the woods entrance in twenty. Or else I will come over there and take away all of your right socks," he threatens me and I scoff at his threat.
"What's that gonna do?" I question his sense of pride and power.
"Irritate you. Trust me, my older brothers used to do that all the time. You do not know how irritating it is until it happens to you," he says before he hangs up and I laugh at his odd sense of threats. I toss my phone onto my bed and walk into my closet to pick out some shorts and a t-shirt.
"Amara!" Trip comes barreling into my room and both of them begin to holler at each other again. I hear my Mom shouting at them from downstairs and of course, that just made it worse.
"Both of you calm down. Lily, go tell Mom about the spill and she'll know what to do. And Trip, apologize to her for goodness sake," I order them and they both glare at each other, not even breaking eye contact as I shove them out the door and into the hallway.
Once I was done getting ready, I grab my phone and head into the hallway to find Trip and Lily glaring at each other right where I left them.
"Move!" I exclaim but the two of them don't even notice. So I walk around them and nearly trip over Cali. I pick up our calico cat and kiss her on the head as she begins to purr.
"Amara! The dishes are waiting for you!" Mom shouts as I walk down the stairs and almost stub my toe on one of Trip's massive toy trucks.
"I'll do them once I get back. Trip! Pick up your toys for once please!" I shout up at them and then they both begin to scream again.
"Hon, please call your Father and tell him to bring some ice cream and bread home?" My Mom asks as I pass by the kitchen and grab the keys to our extra car. I put down Cali and nearly get run over by Xander. Xander is our indoor and outdoor dog. He's an Australian koolie breed and is very energetic. All the time.
"Yeah sure. Is everybody just trying to get me hurt or is that a coincidence?" I ask as I dodge around the dog as he makes a victory lap around the kitchen and into the dining room.
"I don't think so. Unless you did something to the twins. Then they are probably using their telepathy against you," my Mom jokes as I laugh at the dog busting right through the middle of their fight and both of them suddenly go speechless.
"I should've known. Well, I'm gonna go meet Kayden at the woods edge. See ya later!" I say as I head out the front door right before the dog tries to attack me in the middle of his laps again.
I walk over to the car and unlock the driver's door with my key. I hop in and start the car, tuning the radio to my favorite station. I jam out as I drive the car down the bright streets of White Sulphur Springs. Living near a bunch of wildlife reserves always had its perks, like small towns and tight-knit communities and lots of green. White Sulphur Springs was practically surrounded by woods and forest. It was gorgeous at this time of year.
My phone rings and I pick it up to hear Aria's voice chirping on the other line.
"Hi Aria," I greet my girl best friend and she laughs.
"Kayden told me you slept in till 12:30 today," she says and I laugh lightly.
"Yeah. It was nice until he woke me. So what's up?" I ask her and she continues to laugh.
"Oh not much. Just working my way into Evan's heart. Same old same old you could say," she responds and I roll my eyes as I pull into the parking lot that leads into the woods and the town's park.
"I think you should give up on him already. Everybody knows he has a crush on Patricia but it's up to you. It's your feelings, not mine," I say and she scoffs.
"Just cause he's already fallen for a girl doesn't mean I can't steal him away," she says and I roll my eyes again. Aria, my best friend, has been hopelessly in love with Evan King since the beginning of 10th grade. And we're now in 11th grade if that helps give you a timeline of how long she has waited for this guy. I get it that she can't control it but it's been over a year now. Wouldn't she have moved on by now? And plus, he's so full of himself. And nothing about his life is public since he's the top boy in this school to date.
"Well, I'm going to let you get back to that," I say and she yawns into the phone before I hang up. I hop out of my car and lock it behind me once I see Kayden standing next to a tree discussing with someone. I jog over to where he is and stop in my tracks when I see who's with him.
Speak of the devil, I think to myself.
Kayden waves to me as I begin to slow and see him standing there, leaning against a tree in his usual stuck up outfit and attitude.
It was none other than primo boy of Everett High School, Evan King.
