Maya's POV
"Get out of my way, loser." Sneers queen bee, Leighton Despres, as she and her gang of minions stride past. Without warning one of her them jolts into me, sending me and my books crashing into my locker.
Leighton bursts into laughter. It's as if seeing me hurt is the funniest thing she's ever seen. With a defeated expression on my face, I slowly pick up the books i dropped before turning back to my locker.
Typically, nerdy kids like me tend to cry when bullying situations like this occur.
But then again... i'm not like most nerdy kids.
My name is Maya Javaloyes. In the day, I attend Lockwood Heights Academy, where I am constantly bullied and harassed for being the poor, scholarship student. Because of this, I don't really have any friends or much of a social life. But I'm not really bothered since attending school is really just a filler before my 'extra curricular' activities.
Because when night falls, I don my latex rabbit ears and costume, and i become "The Rabbit", the city's most powerful and feared super villain. I'm famous for my ruthless methods and destructive powers and the fact that no super hero has been able to stop me yet, not even "Star Gazer", the most powerful superhero in the whole city.
Obviously, this is a far cry from my "good girl" day-self. But that's okay, because it's exactly the way I want to keep it. Otherwise, people might become suspicious and realise that i'm the Rabbit.
And if that happened, I would have to kiss going to college and having a normal life behind.
As I shove things in and out of my locker the bell suddenly rings. I quickly grab the book I'll need for my next class, which is Ancient History, before hurrying down the hall to class.
When i enter the classroom, I'm immediately hit with a rude and nasty comment by none other then the school's renowned bad boy, Ezra Jeong.
"Hey, good looking." He says, sarcastically. His dumb friends then proceed to wolf whistle at me.
I simply roll my eyes, before finding a seat as far away from him as possible. It's upsetting, but I guess i should just be grateful that he thinks I'm ugly, because it is a huge part of my secret identity.
My villainess alter ego is known for being very beautiful (despite wearing a mask). I, on the other hand, am known for being quite plain and somewhat prude. I usually wear large, baggy sweaters with denim shorts, white sneakers and a huge pair of wide, brimmed glasses. I'm your stereotypical nerd, and practically the complete opposite of the Rabbit, which is a bit ironic I think.
Ezra turns around, blows me a kiss, and then turns back to his friends who immediately burst into laughter. I sigh exasperatedly at the motion, literally defeated by Ezra's teasing.
Ezra is completely unbearable. He treats girls like trash, and only cares about partying and getting drunk. He's the best looking and most popular kid in school, and is dating another one of my other bullies, Leighton Despres.
He loves to harass me with his bullying on a daily basis... without even so much as a break. I can't even remember a day when he hasn't tripped me over in the hall, or said something disgusting to me.
I hate his guts, and if it weren't for the whole protecting my secret identity thing, i would have already killed him.
Our teacher, Mrs Reece enters the classroom five minutes later with a whole folder full of worksheets. She slowly rests them down on her crowded desk, before turning to the class.
"Alright, quite down, class." Mrs Reece says in her loud, domineering voice. "Today, I'll be putting you into partners for a group assignment on the ancient civilisations we've been learning about this term"
The class erupts into a wave of groans. It's obviously because Mrs Reece is choosing our partners for us.
"Shh." she hisses. "This assignment is 30% of your overall mark and I will know if only one person contributes to the project. You'll have the next three weeks to work on it."
I notice some of the popular kids at the back of the room groan. Obviously, they were hoping to dump all of the work on their partners.
"Alright, Casey Aaron, and Achilleo Abella. Vito Anzivino and Christopher Bhatt.--"
Oh no. They're in alphabetical order... which means...
"--Maya Javaloyes and Ezra Jeong" Mrs Reece announces, to which I let out an enormous groan in protest.
Ezra, on the other hand, seems content with Mrs Reece's decision to put us together. Though its probably because he knows i'll be doing most, if not all the work whilst he just sits around. Even if Mrs Reece said not to.
Great. Just fantastic. I get to work with this maniac, and guess what? He's going to rain on my parade, and by parade, i mean my grades. Because if i do this assignment with his help, we will surely fail.
Ezra shoots winks in my direction at the end of class, before quickly rushing off to who knows where. All i can do as i watch him go is wonder how I'm going to make it through the next three weeks.
Especially since we'll have to work on this assignment outside of class.
Ugh.
