Chapter 20: Memories?

Ruby stretched on the couch which had basically become her and Sapphire's new room. At the moment Sapphire was with the other gems on a mission. Since Steven had already been asleep Ruby offered to stay behind and watch him. She was soon beginning to regret it though.

With no one there, Ruby had no one to keep her awake.

"Gotta...stay...." Ruby mumbled to herself as her eyelids grew heavier by the minute, "One...nap couldn't hurt...too......"

"Much."

Ruby took in her surroundings. She was in some sort of room filled with mirrors. Her reflection was the only thing in the room and it seemed like hundreds of her were scattered around everywhere.

Ruby backed away instinctively and felt herself run into someone. She turned around to see for just a split second Peridot.

"What-" Ruby was beyond confused. She turned around to run away but tripped. She fell to the floor and shakily attempted to stand up when a hand grabbed her's and pulled her to her feet.

Ruby was staring at herself who smiled a sickly sweet grin.

"What is this?" Ruby asked.

Mirror Ruby made a shushing motion with her hand, bringing her finger to her lip. Ruby watched, perplexed.

Suddenly Mirror Ruby grabbed Ruby by the throat. Ruby struggled for air for full minutes, almost passing out. Without warning though, Ruby kicked her twin away and the both slid across the floor.

When Ruby opened her eyes she didn't like what she saw. She was threateningly standing over a sleeping Steven with her weapon drawn and above him.

Ruby's eyes widened. She didn't want to think about what would've happened if she hadn't woken up. Slowly she lowered her gauntlet to her side and she sat down on the floor next to his bed, trying to process everything she saw. Who was that other Ruby? Why was Peridot in her dream?

The other Crystal Gems arrived shortly later and Ruby got rid of her weapon for the first time since she woke up.

After the friendly hello's and Steven-was-fine's they soon went back to their rooms, minus Sapphire and Ruby who truly did live on that couch nowadays.

Without words Ruby held Sapphire closely and closed her eyes, certain she could never do harm to anyone with Sapphire at her side.
