I reluctantly got a boat with Teresita,Rose and Ren. The boat wobble a little as I got on.
"Are you ok?" Asked Ren
"Fine" I replied. As we got closer to the castle, I realised how big it was. I looked at the lake and thought I saw something swim pass. I kept looking at the water. Then I saw a face. It was a mermaid. Before I could even do anything, the mermaid rocked the boat and knocked me off. I was franticly trying to keep my head above water. I was worried the mermaid would drag me under, but she seemed to have swam away. I tried to scream but the cold water was suffocating me like an icy hand. Eventually I managed to scream
"HELP!". My head began sinking under. I couldn't move anymore, then suddenly I felt two arm grab my armpits. I was being dragged up. The surface was getting closer. Finally I was in dry land. I was coughing and spluttering. I turned my head to see my rescuer. It was Ren.
"Thanks" I said weakly.
"No bother" he said. We were both shivering. The rest of the boats landed and the giant ( I think his name is Hagrid) came running over.
"Are ye two alrigh' " he said he wrapped a warm coat around, which I took gratefully. He helped me up and he handed Ren another coat.
" Better get ye back to the castle" Hagrid said " you were very brave, diving in after her" he said looking at Ren. We got back to the castle and a professor named mcgonagal dried us of with a spell.
" Now of to the sorting" she said. We entered the great hall and saw four long tables. We lined up with the rest of the first years.
"Everybody quite please" yelled professor Mcgonagal. " the sorting will now begin. She called up some people, but I wasn't listening till she called up Rose.
"Cates, Rose" said professor Mcgonagal. She placed an old and slightly singed hat on Rose's head.
"Ravenclaw!" Shout the sorting hat. I can't believe I didn't notice a talking hat until now.
"Crates, Ren" said professor McGonagal.
"Gryffindor!" Shouted the sorting hat. I thought it was shame that the twins were split up, but they both looked happy. A few more names were called, and then Teresita was called up.
"Dawkes, Teresita" said Professor McGonagal. There was no hesitation and the sorting hat yelled
"Hufflepuff!". It was a shame that all my friends were split up. Time seem to go so slowly, but finally I was called up
"Walsh, Calandra" said Professor McGonagal. I walked up. I wasn't nervous. I felt excited. The sorting hat was placed on my head. It fell over my eyes. It smelt old and burnt.
"Hmm" said a voice. It was the sorting hat.
"A late, muggle-born. Very determined, but too honest for Slytherin. Very wise and open-minded, but not smart enough for Ravenclaw. Very brave, you would do well in Gryffindor, but your also loyal and talented, would make a good Hufflepuff. But where to put you? My decision is.. is... oh I don't know" and to my shock he began to cry. It was so loud and hurt my ears. The hat was yanked of my head by Professor McGonagal. It was taken away by another professor.
"Are you ok, dear?" Professor McGonagal asked me. I nodded. "What did the hat say? He never came a final decision".
"He said Hufflepuff or Gryffindor"
"What house would you like to be in?"
"I.. don't know".
"Well enjoy the feast and figure something out ok".
"Ok". I got up to sit down, but I didn't know where. Then I saw Justin waving for me to come over. So I sat next to him.
"So, you've got no house then?" He asked sounding amused.
"The sorting hat couldn't decide between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff."
"Who wants to be those houses" said a boy at the other side of me. "You should tell them you want to be in Slytherin." Some people around him nodded in agreement. I don't like being told what to do so I said
" I happen to like those house".
"Only blood traitors and mudbloods like those houses, you must be one" sneered the boy. At the sound of the word mudblood Justin got up and punched the boy.
"I've heard you say that word one to many times and if I ever hear you call anyone that again, you'll be sorry." Threatened Justin.
"Justin!" Screeched Professor McGonagal "detention! On the first day and all, I expect better of you". Justin sat down looking glum. Professor McGonagal had taken the boy away. He didn't look like any real damage was done to him though.
"What was that about?" I ask
"He called you a mudblood"
"I don't even know what that is"
" It's a really horrible name for muggle- borns."
" You didn't need to hit him, but thanks for defending me". He smiles at me. I look around and see I'm getting some horrible looks from the Slytherins around me.
"I think I should go" I say. Justin just nods. I go to sit with Teresita.
"Was that the boy from the train? The one looking for his rat?" Asked Teresita.
"Yep, his name is Justin"
"You never said he was a Slytherin"
"Didn't think it mattered. He's not like you described a Slytherin."
"Why did he hit that other boy?"
"He called me a mudblood".
Teresita gasp in shock.
"The bastard"
" I don't really care".
"You should tell the teachers you want to be in Hufflepuff"
" What if I want to be Gryffindor?"
She shrugged.
"Even if you go to a different house, you'll still be my friend right?"
"Of course, and I'm still friends with Rose and Ren... and Justin"
"Good". We ate the rest of the meal in silence. After the feast the prefects were supposed to take us up to our dormitories, but I didn't know where to go.
"You can stay with your friend in Hufflepuff for know" Professor McGonagal told me. The Hufflepuff common room was underground. It was warm and welcoming. I was so tiered I flopped into bed. Why couldn't the sorting hat make a damn decision?
