Me and Mom explained everything about the letter when Dad got home. The next day we went to a place called Diagon Alley, to buy my school supplies. It was all the way in London, but we used some sort of portal in some bar, in Dublin called the Leprechaun's inn. We had to go to a bank called Gringotts, to exchange our normal money for wizard money. It was kind of scary in there. It was run by goblins and they weren't very friendly. They kept calling us muggles. At first my parents were offended, but then a wizard passing by explained that's what magical beings call non-magical beings. The next place we went to was a wand shop. It was run down and obviously one of the oldest shops in Diagon Alley. The sign was scratched, but you could just about read 'Ollivanders'. We went inside. We were greeted by a young man.
"Hello, you must be Ollivander" said my Dad.
"No no, I just work for him. You see he is a bit old and can't run the shop by himself anymore. I'll go get him" said the young man very quickly. A moment later, an old man with long grey hair and silver eyes was walking towards us.
"I assume you are looking for a wand" he smiled down at me. "Well let me see". He began pulling Wands of the shelves. He handed one to me, but before I could even give it a flick, he grabbed it back.
" Definitely not that one" he said. This process was repeated several more times. Some of those times he snatched the wand back quickly, like he did the first time, the other times a vase had to break before he said the wand wasn't for me.
" This one has to be the one" said Ollivander. "An alder wood with unicorn hair core, 8 and three quarter inches and quite flexible". He handed me the wand. He didn't grab it back straight away, which is a good sign. I was really excited. I knew getting my wand was going to be one of the happiest memories of my life. I gave the wand a flick and a silvery light came from my wand. It began to take the form of something, but before I could see what it was it began to fade.
"Oh my, very good, what a talented young witch!"exclaimed Ollivander.
"What, did I do?" I asked.
"Well you just produced a patronus. A faint one, but a patronus none the less."
"I'm sorry, what did you that was?"
"A patronus" he said as if that explained everything. He must of noticed my confused face because then he said
"A magical spell, which you generate by thinking about your happiest memories. Everyone's patronus takes a different form. It's a very advanced spell and there some wizards in the ministry that can't do it. Very handy for sending people messages and keeping away the dementors
"Wow, wait, there's wizards in the ministry and what are dementors?"
"Wizards have their own ministry" he laughed. "And dementors are the guards of Askaban".
" Askaban? I have a lot to learn" I sighed
"Don't worry. Harry Potter had a lot to learn too" said Ollivander
"Who?"
"You can can get some extra books in the book shop and read about this world, Calandra, but we have to go now." Said my mom. We paid for the wand and went to the book shop. When we got to the book shop, I looked at my list. There was a lot of odd titles. The subjects look really exciting. There was books like standard book of spells and History of Magic and Beginners guide to Transfiguration. The book that most excited me was Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. It looks like a really interesting subject. I also like the look of Defence against the dark arts. So after I get my books I get all the other equipment like a cauldron and scales.
"Anything else you need to get, Calandra?" Asked my Dad.
"Ummm no" I replied
"But it says here you can bring a owl, cat or toad" said my mom.
"You don't have to.." I begin
"Well we are getting you one. As a starting school present." Said my mom firmly. I was really happy when she said that. I really love animals and I always wanted a pet. Our house is too small though, so that's why I never got one. The pet shop was filled with magical and none-magical creatures. There was cats, owls, rats and toads, and there just the things I recognised. A magnificent fiery bird caught my eye. A Phoenix. He was very expensive though and required a lot of care. I don't think your allowed to bring a Phoenix anyway. Then I saw a tortoiseshell cat. He gave me a curious look. His eyes were big and cute. He wandered over to me. He cautiously sniffed my hand. He decided that I was ok and rubbed his head against my hand.
"Hey, aren't you cute? Wanna come to Hogwarts with me?" I said to the cat. And surprisingly he seemed to shake his head as if to say yes.
" I see you met, Simba, here. He's an odd cat. We don't know if he's magical or not. He probably is, or else he is just a smart cat." Said the shop assistant. We bought Simba and we went home. It was a long day. I fell asleep as soon as hit the pillow.
