Maria stepped out while I changed into a solid white nightgown with the back cut out so my wings were easily accessible, then came back in when I was finished. She had me lay on the table on my stomach, and then she put something in my wing, making it go numb, she did the same to the other one, since she was going to try to fix that one as well. Then she put a mask on my face, and before I could ask what it was for, I felt myself go unconscious.

**

When I woke up, my wing hurt badly. Whatever Maria had numbed it with for the surgery had worn off, leaving me with a stabbing pain all throughout my wing. I bit my lower lip to keep from crying out, and pushed myself into a sitting position. Glancing around made me suddenly realize that I was no longer in a science lab; I was in a bedroom, lying on a soft bed.

Maria must have moved me once she finished, I thought. It made sense. She had to get me out of her lab as soon as possible, or else visitors, who would most likely be scientists, would see me. She'd probably had her no-good husband carry me here.

I carefully looked back over my left shoulder at my demon wing. It was wrapped in white bandages which had turned slightly pink from the blood they were absorbing. Peering over my right shoulder, I noticed my white wing had a small patch over it where the bullet hole had been. I wonder what she did....

I turned over and sat up straight. I wanted more than anything to get up and walk around, but Maria was sure to have eyes on me somehow.

I looked around the room. Seeing as how there was absolutley nothing for me to do while I recovered, I decided to make the time go by faster the only way I knew how: to sleep.

**

I woke up again the next day to the sound of soft knocking on the door. Without waiting for an answer, Maria quietly opened the door and stepped inside the room.

"Good, you're awake!" she smiled brightly. She came over beside me and set a few tools on the table by the bed. She stood over me and started to feel my wing. "Bones are still in place," she stated casually.

Why wouldn't they be? I thought, a small amount of fear rising in me.

She then started to unwrap the bandages to change them, and once she could fully see my wing, her eyes widened in surprise. Seeing her, my own widened in fear.

"What?" I asked cautiously.

She shook her head, as if clearing it, then smiled at me. She must've noticed my worry. "It's nothing. You just heal faster than I had expected. At this rate, you should be able to go back within a few days."

I smiled at hearing her say that, and my smile was almost as wide as her's.

"Dr. Lynn?" someone called from the hallway.

I tilted my head in confusion as she started to quickly rewrap my wing.

"Who's calling for you?" I asked her.

"We're hosting a convention today," she answered, putting the finishing touches on my bandage. "I'd forgotten all about it when you showed up here injured. Now, don't leave this room or make a sound until I get b-"

The squeak of the door as it swung open interrupted Maria mid-sentence, and she turned to face the four scientists who were filing into the room, all trying to get a peek at the clipboard the one in front was scribbling on. "Dr. Lynn, we were wondering if you knew anything about...." His sentence trailed off as he glanced up from the clipboard, his gaze landing on me.

"Dr. Lynn, you were able to capture her! Well done! Did you find anything?" he asked, approaching with a frightening smile.

Maria stood in front of me, blocking his path. "I'm not experimenting. She's injured, and I'm trying to help."

"If she's injured, she can't escape," a woman from the back of the group pointed out.

"I'm not experimenting, and neither are you as long as I'm around."

I smiled at Maria's attempt at protecting me. She stood tall between me and the scientists, knowing there was no way she can take on all of them.

As if reading my thoughts, the man in the front shoved his clipboard at a woman standing behind him, then advanced, he easily grabbed Maria and shoved her to the side, while the other three came at me. Thinking quickly, I stood on the bed, then swiftly jumped over them. I ran down the hall, searching for a place to hide. The best place I could find was the bathroom, so I entered and locked the door behind me.

I tried to find a way to escape from the room, but the only other exit was a window, and seeing as how both of my wings were out of commission for the time being, and the fact that I was on the top floor, I wasn't getting out that way.

I sat quietly on the floor of the bathroom, trying my best to hide from everyone. There was no way they didn't notice me run in here, so where were they? Why hadn't they tried to catch me?

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, followed by a voice I knew very well.

"Selena?"

I stood and flung the door open, revealing the owner of the voice. My father stood there, worry on his face, and his white gloves stained with crimson blood. I latched onto him, hugging him as tight as I could manage, willing myself not to cry.

"You didn't hurt Maria, did you?" I asked him quietly.

"No, Selena. She's fine. In shock, but fine."

"Good," I said, attempting to hug him tighter.

As if she had heard her name, Maria came running toward us.

"I'm so sorry!" she cried. Tears were rolling down her cheeks in waves, and she was smoothing the hair on the back of my head. "I told my husband not to let any of our guests come up here, but I guess he missed a few..."

"It's alright." I smiled at her, and she smiled back, reaching out to me. She stopped herself, though, dropping her hand.

I let go of my father and hugged Maria. She hugged me back, crying even harder.
