The One In Which Carmen Finally Goes On a Hunt

---

A case had presented itself at the perfect time, Bobby's house was filled with nervous energy and flight risks. Luckily, I'd found a case not too far from Bobby's house, to give myself a break from the boys. I was sitting in my car, for the first time in weeks, drumming my fingers on the steering wheel to the quiet hum of the Beatles.

The town was bigger than the last few I'd worked in but it still was very small. The town was especially quiet this Sunday, perhaps due to the weather or maybe the bodies that keep appearing in the streets.

The case seemed like a shapeshifter, bodies that had been dead for weeks, being found of people who'd still been 'alive'. I decided that I'd try and find who the shifter was impersonating before they moved on to the next victim.

I pulled into a cafe, deciding to grab a coffee before attempting the case. The cafe was eerily quiet aside from a group of girls in the back corner whispering under their breaths. I sat in the booth directly behind them, in order to eaves drop on their conversation.

The cafe was decorated like it hadn't been altered since the 1970's, the woman behind the register looked like she'd been working here that long as well.

The girls in the booth behind me were discussing a reading assignment, I rolled my eyes at how trivial the subject matter was, considering we were currently living through the Apocalypse. My interest was piqued, however, when the subject changed,

"You think Jenny's done it?" A blonde girl, with an annoyingly high-pitched voice asked.

"Probably not, she's been acting really weird," Another replied, her voice was just as annoyingly high.

"Do you think she's on drugs?" A third chimed in, her voice whilst not as annoyingly high was still grating.

I heard the first two girls gasp at her suggestion and they lowered their voices lower so that I couldn't understand them. I felt a small smile creep onto my face, now I've just got to find and kill 'Jenny'.

I walked into the police office, adjusted my blazer and walked to the woman at the desk in the front.

"Can I speak to the Sheriff?" I asked, flipping out my fake FBI badge.

She looked from the badge back to my face and nodded, hurriedly."

Yep, straight through there," she said, motioning with her hand to the door behind her.

I followed her directions and pulled open the door to an office, behind the large wooden desk sat a short stout man who eyed me apprehensively.

"I'm here because of the murders," I began, holding up my badge for him to see, "I need to know the address of a high school aged girl, her first name is Jenny."

He sucked his teeth, seemingly deep in thought, "Jenny Carver?"

"That's her," I replied, not at all sure if it was or not.

"You think she's caught up in this somehow?" He asked, his bushy eyebrows furrowing in fear.

"I can't disclose that right now, sir," I replied, robotically, folding back up my badge and tucking it back into the pocket of my blazer.

He nodded, handing over a piece of paper with her address on it, "She's my daughter's best friend, I've known her since she was in pigtails. Jenny couldn't hurt a fly," he said, attempting to keep his tone level but I noticed the fear in his voice.
