Ringing fills the room, signalling the end of school. A dainty girl is shoved to the ground as people mill past her.
"Hey! Watch it Robin!" yells one of her classmates as they push her out of the way.
At school, everyone bullies Robin. She has no friends, and everyone looks at her like an alley cat who has lived in the weather for a little too long; they feel the smallest bit of guilt, and yet they don't want to get close to her. The teachers at her school are the only people who she gets along with.
"It'll get better, Robin, trust me. You won't be treated like this forever. Just watch, one day you will rise above them all, and they'll be wondering why they ever mistreated you," Mr. Woolledge tells her. He's always been her favorite teacher.
"I really hope it does. Every day is getting harder and harder for me. Sometimes I just don't want to go on with this," she replies.
"Hey, don't talk like that."
"I'm sorry. I've got to go. I'll see you tomorrow Mr. Woolledge."
"See ya," he replies with a concerned look on his face.
The odor of sweat and grime hits her face as she steps onto her bus. A foot is stuck out in the isle as Robin passes, and air brushes past her face as she falls to the ground. She stands back on her feet and grimaces, but does not say a word. As she walks to her normal bus seat, she can see that it and all surrounding seats are deserted.
After a while, the bus finally nears her stop. Ghetto houses covered in stains and ivy line the street, and the bus screeches to a halt. Her house is a few miles away, impossible to walk in the sweltering Arizona heat. Again, no car is waiting for her, so she has to sit in the shade of a dead tree, which is like trying to hide from the sun under a feather- useless.
"Geez, would it kill you to be early for once?" Robin remarks at her mother as the car pulls up fifteen minutes after she arrived. The inside smells of marijuana and ash. The floor is littered with ancient candy wrappers and receipts, and something sticky that you can never quite get off of your shoe.
"Would it kill you not to have an attitude? I've been having an awful day," her mother replies, sourly.
"Your days aren't as bad as mine are," Robin mutters under her breath.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
Her mother glares at her, then moves her gaze back on the road. Suddenly, she hits the car brakes, hard and suddenly. Robin is thrown forward, only being held back by the measly thing that her mother calls a "seat belt," really just a strap of worn out leather pinned to the seat in replacement of the one which used to reside there. It burns her collar bone, leaving a bright red mark in it's absence.
"Shit!" her mother shouts.
Dazed, Robin looks up. A dog saunters across the road, not seeming to care that there is a car inches away. "Get out of the road!" her mother screams. The horn blazes at the deer. It looks up in a rather confused manner, then strolls off the road. As soon as it is clear of the hood, the car speeds forward.
"What's got you so uptight today, mother?"
"Don't use that tone with me! Just shut your mouth and mind your own business."
"What tone? I was only wondering..."
"You know what, when we get home, you're grounded. You need to learn your place. I am your mother, and I am in charge. Not you. You are to stay in your room until I tell you that you can leave it. And no dinner."
Soon, they pull into the driveway. Robin hurries to get out of the car and into the house before her mother does. She runs through the front door, slamming it. She passes the hallway to her room, walking into the dim kitchen. Spills cover the floor, and with every step, her feet stick. She throws open the cupboard and grabs a box of stale crackers. Then, she opens the refrigerator door and grabs a half-drank bottle of lemonade. Dashing down to the end of the hall with her prizes, she closes her bedroom door.
