It was dark. She could smell the dust. Objects of torture line the wall, and Robin's palms grow clammy.

"Mom... I didn't mean to make you mad... Please forgive me," she pleaded. "I won't ever do it again. Please."

"I gave you a chance, and you didn't take heed of it. Now you're paying the price," Her mother responded.

A tear slipped down Robin's cheek as she knelt down on the cement block. A stinging sensation burned at her back as her mother cracked the whip. She could feel the blood trickle down her back. Again and again the whip came down upon her. Finally, the whipping stopped.

"Go clean the house. You need to learn discipline. If this happens again, you'll be getting a whole lot worse. I was generous this time," her mother said. Then, she spat at Robin and left the basement.

For a little while, Robin sat alone in the basement. All around her, she could see old blood stains. Her back hurt when she tried to move, so she limited her movements. If it's like usual, then she would have plenty of time to recover before having to go to work.

She sat still by the wall, listening to the noises around her. Water dripped from the ceiling to the floor. Above, she could hear her mother stomping around the house. She guessed that she was steaming from anger. After all, Robin had upset her pretty bad. She usually didn't talk back as much as she did this time.

Another bang sounded from upstairs, but Robin disregarded it as her mother continuing to destroy the house. What else could it possibly be? Above her, the sounds continued, growing more and more violent.

"Mother? Please don't destroy anything of mine," she called.

No response.

Robin sighs. "I hope she isn't touching my stuff."

This inspires her to get up. Slowly, she stands, flinching as she moves. More blood pours down her back. "Ah!" the deep cuts make it difficult to move, so she groans.

Eventually though, she is able to get into an upright position. Wincing with each step, she makes her way  towards the stairs. The more she tries to walk, the less her back hurts. From experience, she knows that moving lessens pain, so she grits her teeth and continues walking. She slips when she puts her foot on the first step, and hits her jaw on a step above her.

"Ow..."

She feels her jaw, but it doesn't seem as if it took any damage. There will probably only be a bruise. She gets to her feet again.

When Robin get's halfway up the stairs, the door slams. She wasn't expecting this, so she stumbles on the stairs. However, this time she doesn't fall. She does scream though.

"Shut up! Get up here and start cleaning!" her mother yells at her.

She gets to the top of the stairs and turns the door handle. It doesn't turn. She tries again, but it still doesn't budge. "Mother, I can't though. You locked the door."

"No I didn't. Why would I do that? You need to get to work!" her mother shouts back, sounding annoyed.

"But... Why did the door slam? And why is it locked?" Robin meekly replies.

"I don't fucking know. But if you're such a know-it-all, you know how to get out!"

"Yeah... the door needs to be unlocked... But the lock is on the other side of the door. Please, mother."

A clicking sound comes from the other side of the door. Robin reaches out and wrenches on the nob, but still, nothing happens. "It's still not opening," Robin calls out to her mother.

"Well how am I supposed to know why? I didn't fucking lock it."

The hanging light bulb above the stairs flickers. She dismisses it as the bulb needing replaced. An ominous click is audible from her side of the door, and is followed by it slowly creaking open, allowing a crack of light to stream in. Robin's mother isn't on the other side of the door anymore, but she's sure that she had opened it for her.

"Thank you, mother."

The house turns dark as every light goes out, leaving only the light from outside to enter. Robin then smells something putrid. It's exactly like the stench of rotten eggs.
