Robin was in her math class studying calculus. She worked hard to have the best grades she could, because maybe, just maybe, that would make her life better. Actually, it definitely would. Her grades are so high that she could easily get a scholarship to almost any school of her choosing, which would mean getting out of this life of hers.
Everyone in the classroom is silent, doing the 53 question long test. She was halfway through, and was pretty confident that she was doing it all right. Apparently, the person next to her was confident she was too, because he kept looking over at her paper. Noticing this, she moved her arm to cover the answers.
"Hey, move your arm or I'm going to fucking destroy you after school," he rage-whispered at her.
She tried to ignore him. She knew that if she talked, she might be heard, which would mean failing this test. This is why she didn't say anything back. She beyond wanted to though, because she was tired of people pushing her around.
"Didn't you hear me, you deaf little bitch? I said you're dead," he whispered louder. In fact, loud enough for the teacher to hear.
"Excuse me?" said Mrs. Smith, strictly. "Did I just hear what I think I heard?"
"Depends, what do you think you heard?" he smirked.
"That's it, Mr. Thompson. Detention, tomorrow after school. Give me your test and go wait in the office."
When he left the room, several people started snickering. "Quiet!" snapped the teacher. Everyone returned their gazes to their tests.
Thirty minutes later, the last person finished their test. With only seven more minutes left in the class period, they were able to do whatever they wanted. Robin went to the back of the room and sat down against the wall. She put in headphones which were blasting out her favorite song- Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots.
The bell rang, and everyone started filing out of the room. Robin was the last one out. She smiled at the teacher and quietly said, "Thank you."
"No problem, Robin," Mrs. Smith smiled back.
Robin left the room to go to her next class, which was art.
In this class, everyone was always smiling because of how easy going the teacher was. They always listened to classic rock while there was incense going. Yes, it seems very hippie-like. That's why they liked it. Everyone could relax.
Robin sat at a table towards the back corner of the room where no one else was. She loved this class because it meant that she could do what she loved. Plus, the teacher was always there for her and helped her out with any problems the other students caused.
Today, they were working on watercolor paintings of flowers. She hated painting, because she thought she was bad at it, but watercolor worked well for her. She started sketching out a tiger lily, her favorite flower.
When she was little, her mother found a small kitten on their property. After a few days, she caught it. Robin begged her mother to keep it, and finally, after calling her father who was hunting deer at the time, she agreed. She loved Disney when she was younger, and wanted to name the kitten after a Disney princess. She settled on Tiger Lilly. The kitten had to only be a few weeks old. It was a tortoiseshell. They raised it for years, until one day, it disappeared. A couple weeks after, while Robin was away, her mother found the cat dead in the driveway. It had been killed by a rattlesnake.
But, that's why it was her favorite flower. They always reminded her of her first cat, the one her mother let her keep while she still loved Robin.
She started painting the petals yellow and orange and the stem and leaves green. When the paint was finished drying, she detailed it and made it look as realistic as she could. The finished product was beautiful. Proud of her work, she signed it and brought it to the teacher.
She walked towards her desk and sat back down. There was still thirty minutes left in class, so she sat back in her chair and turned on music.
The rest of class went by quickly for her, and soon she was leaving for her next class. This class seemed to be moving at light speed, because before she knew it, class was over. Besides a lot of taunting, it went well. Grabbing her stuff, she started walking towards the door. She passed Brock Thompson, who, for a second, seemed to have black eyes. She dismissed this because she thought she was just tired.
Several more times this happened. Five more people looked like their eyes were completely black.
Soon, she was at her bus stop. "Have a nice night," the bus driver said, sounding bored.
For once, her mother was on time. This surprised her. She walked over to the red Ford Explorer that was parked there. "How was your day?" her mother asked when she opened the door.
Her mother had said something to her that wasn't hateful. That's it she thought to herself, I'm dreaming. "Um... Fine... Why would you even bother asking though? I thought I was a 'worthless piece of shit,'" she replied.
For a second, her mother looked confused. Then, it looked like she realized something. "Get in the fucking car. Why did I even waste my time asking you that, whore?" This obviously was a question for herself.
Robin was confused now. What was happening to her mother? Why did she greet her by being... kind? Why did she not seem like she knew who she was? These were all questions she had.
They started driving home, her mother whispering to herself the whole way. Robin couldn't hear what she was saying, but could make out a few words. "Quaerere... Memento... Quis est iste homo in animam?" Robin couldn't understand, but knew that it was in another language. Her mother couldn't speak any other languages.
"Mother? What are you talking about?"
"Shut up!" The car swerved.
The car pulled into the driveway and Robin walked into the house. Immediately, the smell of smoke was apparent, but not entirely recent. Then, another stench hit her. The sulfur was back. She saw some in the middle of the floor in the living room. Turning around, she saw her mother standing in the doorway, her eyes entirely black.
