Chapter 18

I woke up the following morning breathless. It was like I had a nightmare but not quite. No-one was trying to kill me or anything, but you could say my dream was worse than a creepy nightmare.

I was in the middle of a dessert with Luke. He was looking at me with so much love and admiration one minute but with so much anger and hate the next. Next thing I knew, I was on the dessert alone and surrounded by people eating sharks! Oh the irony.. Sharks on a dessert? Turns out my dream self was crazy in many ways.

That's when I woke up.

I threw my legs over the bed and slipped my feet into my slippers whilst clutching my chest to slow my breathing. I could hear my mum shouting that breakfast was ready from downstairs, so I picked up my phone from the bedside table to check the time. It read: 9:54.

"I'll be down in a sec!" I also noticed a few more missed calls from Brooke last night and resisted the urge to phone her and wake her up to tell her to stop being such a gossip raging teenager. Brooke had to know every single detail of everyone's business but nothing major happened, so she had no reason to be so adamant, right?

I sighed and walked down stairs still fully clothed from the night before.

"It's on the table." my mum said. She was facing her back to me with her hands plunged into the sink. Her short dark hair bobbed as she scrubbed the dirty plates.

"thanks." I sat down at the table and stuck my fork into a tatty scone and bringing it up to my mouth.

When I finished, my mum picked up my plate and put that into the sink too. She gave me a weird look and eyed me up and down. "why are you still wearing clothes?"

"Feel asleep." I said, standing up and heading for the shower.

An hour later, I was fully clothed and sprawled across my bed half way through a history assignment when my phone buzzed from my pillow.

Expecting it to be Brooke, I answered it without looking at the caller ID with a monotone 'hello?"

"oh, I didn't think you would answer." I groaned when my brain registered Aaron's voice. He sounded startled. "please don't hang up. I need to talk to you."

Agitated, I replied "what is it? I'm busy." i was still annoyed at him from yesterday. I was sure he was bi-polar.

"so.. I heard you went out with that Luke guy last night?"

Seriously? He thinks he can just phone me up and demand to hear an explanation about a day out with a friend? "not that it's anything to do with you.."

"I know, but I just wanted to look out for you. He's not all he makes out to be so be careful."

Be careful? What did that mean? He wasn't some sort of creepy homicidal perve, he was just a guy! "Aaron, he's not a stalker. And it's none of your business who I spend my time with!" I spat down the phone.

"please don't be mad, you'll figure it all out when the time comes. I just needed to warn you. And look.." he began a new sentence so I couldn't cut him off with his silly assumptions. "... I'm sorry. About Stacey and everything. I know it was pretty selfish of me to bring her in the cinema to begin with, but allowing you to see that yesterday and not doing much about it was such a dick move, I know. But you need to know that I only brought her because Jason told me that I couldn't come with you guys if I came alone. He just doesn't want you to get hurt, I guess, but you know that I wouldn't ever hurt you, right? And I had to be there because.. I ..."
