I lay by the icy water reflecting the midnight glow from above, I smiled at the inky waves lapping at my toes like hopeful pups. The moon formed a pale beam from over a hill; it glanced across the water creating a milky spotlight on my almond skin.
I felt a stir in my back that slowly dispersed around my body until every fibre of my being trembled. I gave one final smile, staring up at the diamonds amongst the black sky, and then I cried out in pain.
I crawled around on the floor shaking and screaming as my bones cracked and skin ripped. I could not tell one excruciating moment from the next, finally my cries became less and less human until, instead of sobs, howls could be heard echoing across the once silent hills.
I stood quickly feeling the rough dirt beneath my claws, the soggy mud seeping into my paws. I needed to find pack I thought and so I found myself darting along forest trails and leaping tree trunks two metres high. Scents hit me from all around, I could follow the trail of a bird who had been here two days ago or a rabbit who left within three hours of this place.
A snap was heard behind me, I spun around and began to growl, my fur raising on my neck and back; I quickly quieted as I realised the thing was beyond my field of vision. I tracked it's movements by sound and judged it by its scent: it was not from here; it was big and tall; it chatted and sqwarked and then it got closer.
I darted off into the undergrowth and the thing gave chase, it was heavy and slow,a snail chasing a hare. It gave up as soon as I approached the scrubland, I knew my pack had been through here and so I began to follow their trail. At first I was cautious that this may be an old scent and would be no good but then, as I followed it more, I gathered loads of information: they had eaten a deer here where the though grass had been painted with blood, they had rested there beside a great oak to protect them from the wind that howled with them. I let out a joyful yip as I reached them, mounds of shining steel glistening and alert, a warning growl was drawn and so I bowed, head to the sparse grass as I approached. The Alpha came forward followed by her Beta, they both watched me and sniffed down wind of me, until they decided I was one of them.
I was then bombarded with lower wolves licking and nuzzling me. The Alpha then came close, rubbing her body of silver flaked with coal along mine, proving that I was part of her pack.
I yipped happily, silhouetted against the China glazed moon. The brittleness of the situation soon dawned on me as pair of doll-like eyes turned to the forest; from there we could hear the cracking and breaking, the accompanying shouts were loud enough to wake the nearby sparrows, taking off like ash in the wind.
I picked up the scent and alerted the others I had encountered them before thorough my body language. My ears flicked back and forth anxiously as we waited for the Alphas verdict (she stared at us all prancing and whining for a second) and then she ran.
We followed her black paws as she dashed and darted though the tough grass. We could now clearly see the things that were chasing us, they were proportional with far too long legs and little propellers (that flapped around doing nothing) on their torso.
Together we bounded over the rocks and grass, the Alpha leading us all. Her Beta was a large black wolf with oak brown eyes, he followed closely behind her and would sometimes glance back to check on the rest of us.
Suddenly loud booms erupted from behind us near where the beasts were. Then the scattering of pebbles was heard barely behind us. The Alpha then swerved to the forest where the trees were more densely packed. The beasts behind began to yell as the booming became louder and closer.
We were about to enter the emerald canopy when two wolves abruptly fell. They were both older, one missing a tail and the other could only just run. We knew they were probably not going to make it to next year however they didn't deserve to die like this.
I gave a glance back before sprinting faster than ever into the undergrowth hiding in the leaves and bracken. Our Alpha blinked at us, a warning to not make a noise; I crouched low next to a tawny brown wolf with torn ears. He stared at me solemnly as we waited, my muscles burned and trembled as we stayed silent as hunting foxes.
The beasts meandered back and forth calling joyously to each other. I could smell the dead wolves, the image of their torn bodies burned into my mind. The tawny wolf's gentle brown eyes held mine in understanding, I shivered a little and so he pressed a little closer with his thick fur. I nuzzled into his side until the Alpha slowly rose, she flicked her ears back and forth in warning for us to not follow, she then silently hopped over the bushes accompanied by her Beta.
She nodded to us, before I knew it we had reached the beach where I had started. I growled forgetting who I was with as they lounged around disrespecting my place. The Alpha growled back and so I quickly ducked to the ground.
Suddenly howls of pain erupted as fur ripped and bones cracked, I tried to crawl away but she held my eyes forcing me to stay. I felt a tingling in my body that soon morphed into pain. She beckoned me over to the woods, a secluded patch away from where others were crawling around dragging themselves across the leaves.
Pain exploded in my shoulder, the Alpha just stared down at me as I collapsed. I felt so much resentment for her then, her snobbish attitude staring at me, not helping.
When I awoke I was naked on a floor of leaves, a pair of gentle brown eyes stared down at me. I knew I had seen them before and then I felt so embarrassed. He averted his eyes quickly; his cheeks turning a bright shade of pink in embarrassment.
I was then thrown a black tee shirt (it was obviously new that made me feel uncomfortable) and a pair of jogging bottoms along with the appropriate underwear. He walked away to let me get changed, after I did I approached him giving him a quick peck on his cheek. He turned in shock but I had already left.
And that is how my first transformation went down.
Stab that little star if you enjoyed this chapter and I hope your next meal is not burnt.
