Prologue
She had to get away. Far, far away so they could be safe. She clutched her sleeping baby to her chest, and got on the bus to Miami. There were barely any vampires in Florida, since the sun burned so brightly there.
She looked at her baby. He looked so peaceful in his sleep. Completely oblivious to the dangers around him. Vampires only got harmed in the sun after a certain age. It would bother his eyes and skin a little bit, but it would be tolerable for now.
He looked so much like his father. She had left him a note explaining why she had to leave, but she would miss him so much. A tear fell out of her eye, and on to her infant's cheek. He woke up and cooed at her. She still hadn't come up with a name for him. "I think I'll name you Joshua, after your father." She spoke in a low voice, in case there were vampires close enough to hear.
More tears fell down her cheeks, and she took a tissue out of her purse to wipe them. She spent the whole bus ride thinking. How would she support her son? Did they have many jobs available late at night? How would she find a house or apartment? Would they look for her there? What if they found her? Questions kept running through her mind.
She had only brought about $1000 in her purse and a small bag full of clothes. When she had found out that they were looking for her, she just took her 2 month old baby, grabbed whatever was in her sight, and left.
The bus pulled over and the driver announced that they had arrived. She got out and walked away. The sun was coming up in 2 hours, where could she go? After walking for a while, she was desperate, so she asked someone on the street, "Do you know if there's an apartment for rent anywhere?"
To her surprise, he answered, "Yes, go around that corner and keep walking until you reach building 458. There's an empty apartment there."
"Thank you so much, sir!" she said as she ran toward the corner. The building took her about 20 minutes to get to. She ran up the stairs and rang the doorbell that said 'landlord' next to it.
A man came downstairs looking as though he just woke up, "What?"
"I heard there was a room for rent here? Please let me stay here at least for today, I have money and-"
He cut off her rambling, "Yeah, sure. Come inside." She walked inside and followed him up the stairs. When they got to the second floor he told her, "Wait here one second." She nodded. He went upstairs and came back down with a key. "The walls are pretty soundproof, but don't blast any music, and try to keep that baby quiet," he said, opening the door.
"Of course, thank you so much, sir." He just smiled and walked away. She went into the apartment, it wasn't too bad. There was no furniture or anything like that, but it was clean, so she put the bag down on the floor. "Do you want to take a bath?" she asked Joshua. He cooed, so she took that as a yes. She looked in the rooms, looking for a bathroom.
When she found it, she put him in the bathtub but didn't run the water or take his clothes off while she went to get his clean clothes. She went back to get the bag, relieved that she had found a place to stay. In her relief, she didn't notice that there were no drapes, and the sun was coming up. She quickly tried to find something to cover it, but it was too late.
The sun came up and she started burning. The pain was so horrible that she screamed a blood curdling scream. She hadn't fed, though, so her throat became dry, and nothing came out. Joshua was crying in the bathtub. Her last thought was, 'Who will take care of my son?'
