Chapter 1
"Oh, can't tell me nothin' now, baby I know how to fly. Oh, nothin' can hold me down, I'm gonna touch the sky." I woke up to my cell phone ringing Shut it Down by Pitbull. I answered it, "Hello?" My voice was groggy from sleep.
"Hey, Amoreena, can you come over?" Eric asked.
He sounded kind of... off. "Why? What's wrong?"
"You're gonna get mad."
"What did you do?" I asked, suspicious.
"Nothing! It's just... there's a baby crying in the apartment upstairs."
"Call your landlord."
"He's not here. I don't know where he went."
"So why did you call me?"
"'Cause I figured you might know something about babies."
I got pissed. "Why's that? Because I'm a girl?"
"See, I knew you were gonna get mad. Look, I don't hang out with any other girls and the guys are... well, you know them."
That was true. "Fine, I'll be right over."
"Thanks." He hung up.
"What happened to saying bye?" I asked myself.
I showered and got dressed in some torn up jean capris, a light blue t-shirt with black writing that said 'Sarcasm is the brain's natural defense against stupidity', and some really cool sunglasses. They weren't $200 ones or anything like that, but they looked great. I wasn't the type of girl who didn't like things that weren't a good brand or whatever.
I was only 18, but I had my own apartment and a job as a lifeguard at the beach across the street. My mother died giving birth to me and my father I wanted nothing to do with, so I grew up in foster home after foster home. Four months ago, I turned 18 and left.
My apartment was decent. I didn't want a big place because they were too expensive and harder to take care of. It had two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, and a kitchen. One bedroom was mine and the other was my roommate Shawn's. We split the rent and grocery money and he was cool to live with.
He had gotten into some trouble with his parents about a month after I started renting this place, so I offered him a room since I hated living alone anyway. I went to the kitchen and tossed two pieces of bread in the toaster and found some butter. Usually, I cooked something like an omelet or bacon for breakfast, but I had a soft spot when it came to babies and little kids.
The toast popped out and I threw some butter on the slices. Shawn came out of his room in his boxers. He was pretty hot with dirty blonde hair and nice muscles but I'd never felt a spark toward him in that way. "Ew, go put some clothes on before you scar me for life." I was just teasing, and he knew that.
"Aww, baby, you know you want some of this. You don't have to fight it." I was pretty sure he didn't like me that way, considering his history of girlfriends since we met. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't jealous or anything, I actually liked that he was just a friend with no complicated relationship or sexual tension between us.
I rolled my eyes. "I'm going over to Eric's place. He said there's a baby crying in the upstairs apartment." I took a bite out of the toast.
"Seriously? I didn't think you had a maternal side to you."
I swallowed and told him, "I actually do like kids, believe it or not."
"I'm going with not." He grabbed the other slice of toast.
