Chapter 6

Shawn's POV

"Reena!" I called. Samantha was meeting me by the boardwalk and then we were going to the movies. This is gonna make me sound like such a chick, but I didn't know what to wear. I desperately wanted to make a good impression with her. I ran my hand through my hair. Ah, shit, I had just fixed my hair!

"Be right there!" Sometimes living with a girl for a roommate was awesome. Then she had to go and bring a baby in here. Chris was cute and all, but we were only 18 for Christ's sake! At least the walls were thick enough that I didn't hear him if he woke up in the middle of the night. She walked in and asked, "Yeah?"

Sheepishly, I mumbled, "I need help finding something to wear."

She stared at me, blinked a few times, and then collapsed on my bed, laughing while clutching her stomach. When she finally calmed down, she asked, "Can't find anything that doesn't make your butt look big?" At my glare, she said, "Alright, alright, chill. Don't get your panties in a knot; that would probably be painful. Where are you guys going?"

"The movies."

She went to my closet and looked through it. The hangers were moving so fast I didn't get how she was even getting a good look at them. "You know, you're getting really worked up over this girl."

"I know. I can't help it. Sam's totally different from the other girls." It was true; she was just so sweet and kind. We had talked at the beach for hours and I didn't get sick of it like I did with other girls.

"You think she's the one?" Reena asked, grabbing two t-shirts and tossing them on the dresser.

"I dunno."

"Well, you're already half whipped. If she feels the same way that you do, you've got something. Here, hold these." She handed me a dark red t-shirt with a black AC/DC logo on it and a blue and white one with a surfboard on it. One was in each hand and she pulled a pair of jeans out. "Put the jeans on and try on the black shirt." I wasn't wearing a shirt, so I just threw it on and Reena turned around while I put on the jeans.

"'K, I'm done." She turned around and looked me up and down, but not like she was checking me out or anything.

"You're good to go, and red is definitely your color."

"You sure I don't look too... casual?"

"Dude, you guys are going to the movies, not a fancy restaurant. Oh, and tell her she's welcome to come over whenever."

"Will do. Thanks for everything, Reena." I grabbed some money and my keys then kissed her on the cheek and left.

"That's gross!" she shouted right before I shut the apartment door. I chuckled to myself. My stupid grin wouldn't go away as I thought about seeing Samantha again.

Over the past few months, I've been trying to find a girl to get serious with. The going to parties, getting drunk, and having sex with random people was getting kinda old. I didn't wanna be one of those people that end up 40 years old with nobody.

My older brother, Dylan, was already married and had a daughter on the way. I was envious of him whenever he came over with Alicia, his wife. They were always so happy together, like they were in their own little bubble and nothing could penetrate it. Our parents were so proud of him, but then again, he was always the favorite. It sucks living in the shadow of someone else; especially a family member.

The less than happy thoughts in my mind stopped when I saw Sam sitting on the steps to the boardwalk, looking nervous and playing with her fingers. She looked amazing. She was wearing a knee length hot pink dress that showed just enough of her cleavage to drive me insane and at the same time, leave me curious to see more. Her red hair and light skin contrasted the dress nicely.

She heard my footsteps and looked up, smiling. "Hey," she said, standing up.

"Hi. You look beautiful."

Flushing, she looked at the floor and mumbled a thanks. Her reaction made me smile; was she not used to getting compliments? When I said things like that to other girls, they just gave me a look that said they knew and said thanks. Samantha had to realize how gorgeous she was.

I took her hand and we walked to the movie theater. "Aren't we gonna drive there?"

"It's only a few blocks away. You haven't been there?"

She shook her head, making her straightened hair sway slightly. "I've only lived here for about a week so far, so I'm not really familiar yet."

Her voice was so pretty; light and a bit high pitched but not at all whiney. "I'll have to take you on a tour sometime. How come you moved here?"

The look she gave me was nervous and slightly offended. "Why?"

"'Cause I'm not usually that lucky. There has to be some kind of catch."

Rather than smiling or laughing like I had intended, she looked down. "Well, there sort of is. I'd rather get this out now than after I get to know you better." She took a deep breath and braced herself. "I'm here living with a foster family."

Was that all? "So what?"

She looked up at me hesitantly, "You'd wanna be with a girl that's carrying baggage like that?"

"Amoreena moved here to live with foster parents; it's really no big deal." I shrugged. Why was she so nervous about something like that?

"Really?"

"Yeah. I like you, and I wanna get to know you better. Unless of course you're a serial murderer or a rapist. Actually, I don't think I'd mind the second one."

This time she did laugh. "So what's your relationship with Amoreena?"

"She's like my sister. I moved in with her to get out of my parents house a few months ago, but it's never been romantic between us."

"Why'd you leave your parents house?" I felt like she was deliberately trying to keep me from asking questions about her.

"A bunch of reasons. How 'bout you? Do you like the foster parents you live with now?"

She shrugged. "They're okay, I guess. Better than most." She had a history, I was sure, but I wouldn't push her to tell me right now. When she trusted me, then she could tell me.

We spent the whole night like that; talking, laughing, and holding hands. The movie was a little scary. Most girls would have used that as an excuse to cuddle, and I thought she would, given how fragile she seemed, but she surprised me by not even seeming shaken. A smile took over my face. I was so gonna like this girl.

When the movie was finished, we walked back home together. At the boardwalk, as I was reluctantly saying goodbye, I kissed her again, just like at the beach. I didn't wanna push her since she seemed so innocent and gentle, but she surprised me by grabbing the back of my neck and deepening the kiss. This could get addictive.

We kissed for a few minutes before we broke apart. "I'll see you next Saturday, cool?" I asked her.

"Yeah, I'll meet you here." I kissed her once more on the lips and walked away. Next week, we planned to hang out on the beach and I was giving her a tour. I couldn't wait.

I got back to my apartment and Reena was on the couch with Chris, feeding him a bottle while she was on the phone. There was something weird about that kid. "Yeah, I'll talk to you tomorrow. Bye," she hung up.

She heard me walk in and looked over her shoulder, smiling. "How'd it go?"

"Great. I owe you so much for introducing us. Who was on the phone?"

"Eric." I knew she was gonna say that. I didn't hate the guy, I just hoped, for his sake, that he didn't hurt her. He was a player so I thought there was a chance he'd cheat on her or break her heart or something. If he - if anyone - ever hurt anyone that I cared about, they were in serious trouble.

"I'll kill him if he hurts you. Make sure he knows that. G'night." I went in my room and fell asleep, picturing Sam's face.
