Chapter 4
Chris sat on my lap in the back seat as Eric drove to the store. In my mind I was making a list of things we would need. Car seat, stroller, more bottles, clothes, two cribs, pacifiers, toys, books on parenting, high chair... the list went on and on.
I was on the seat next to the window and I noticed Chris was burrowing himself against me, trying to get away from the sun. I scooted in the middle where there was more shade. "Uh, Eric? I think he might have a sun allergy or something. It seems to be bothering him."
"Yeah, I noticed he didn't like being by the windows when I was watching him. We'll take him to the doctor or something."
"Oh, that reminds me; I gotta call that lawyer to get fake birth certificates and shit like that. Benny gave me the guy's number."
"Are you gonna make it say we're his parents?"
"That would be the easiest thing to do, I think," I told him, taking my phone out. The call was quick and I set up a meeting for us the next day.
When I got off, Eric looked thoughtful. "Should we tell Chris that we're not his parents or pretend that we are?"
"I guess we'd have to tell him. Neither of us has blonde hair, my eyes are brown, yours are dark blue, plus he doesn't look anything like us. I wouldn't want to lie to him anyway."
"Yeah, you're right." We got to the store and went inside. Chris was sleeping on my shoulder. It felt so... I couldn't really explain it. I'd always wanted a family, and it was like I had one now. Eric grabbed a cart and we went to the clothes section.
"We should also get one of those suction things that stick to the window to shade him from the sun." He nodded.
There was a shirt I just had to get for him that said 'Party at my crib, 2:00 AM'. "Eric, look at this," I showed him the shirt.
He laughed, "I'm totally getting that for him."
"Nuh-uh! I saw it first."
He gave me an incredulous look. "You seriously think I'm letting you pay for anything?"
"Yeah, duh."
"Hell no. I'm the man of the fam-" he stopped himself before he said family and blushed.
"It's alright, I kinda feel that way, too. And I'm paying for at least half."
"No you're not."
"Yes I am."
"No way."
"Try and stop me."
"Gladly."
Laughter cut me off before I could say anything back. Eric and I looked over and there was a man and a pregnant woman a few feet away from us. "Sorry," the woman apologized, "you just remind us of the way we used to be." She looked at the man, who I guessed was her husband, with adoration.
"You're having a baby together?" I asked. The guy nodded. "How far along are you?"
"Seven months. This will be our third one."
"That's so sweet," I smiled. I felt a sharp pang of envy, but I beat it back. "How old are the other two?" Eric went to look at other clothes.
"Our oldest is a boy who's seven and a little girl who's turning four soon." The look on his face was fatherly pride.
"Congratulations," I said sincerely.
"Thank you," the woman smiled at me and they left toward the strollers.
