Servant of Evil

Chapter 1

Winter, a time when everything was cold and dying, two twin hedgehog boys were born. Two young boys, whose quills were turned upright, streaks on both arms and legs. The elder one, who was named Mephiles, had serpent green eyes, pale powder blue streaks and a dark gray fur color. While the younger of the two, who was named Shadow for the color of his fur, had crimson eyes, bright red streaks and an ebony fur for his pelt. Their parents rejoiced and thank the gods for the wonderful blessing bestowed upon them and took great care for the twins.

Years passed and Shadow and Mephiles have grown into young children at around the age of 5. They were inseparable; wherever Mephiles is, Shadow would follow. And they would do everything together too. Surely nothing could ruin such a blissful childhood such as this.

But one day, after they finished playing in the yard, the two young boys entered their kitchen to witness their mother crying. Shadow ran towards their mother and tried to hug her. Mephiles did the same, but still their mother continued to cry. Then they heard their father coming in the kitchen along with some officers who were under the king. Their mother began to go into hysterics.

"No please!! don't take my son away! PLEASE!"
"I'm sorry ma'am, but this is the king's orders

"Mommy, what's happening?" asked little Mephiles. Then without warning the knights took hold of his brother Shadow and began walking away. The ebony boy began wailing hysterically, unaware of what was happening yet terrified at the same.

"MOMMY!! DADDY!!!" came the ebony male's cries, but still, he was carried away, away from his only family. His brother Mephiles tried to stop the knights and even threw his toy on one of the guards' head. The guard pushed him to the ground before leaving their small home.

Pain. That was what he felt. He doesn't know why but his chest hurt. Somewhere in his chest he felt something being torn, especially in his heart. His brother, his only brother was ruthlessly taken away, and his parents were also in pain, especially his mother. He felt angry as well, why would the king do something as cruel and unfair as this?? He felt angry that his brother was taken away, he felt angry that his parents were crying, he felt angry because there was nothing he could do to stop this from happening to them. Tears made their way to his eyes and fell endlessly from the amount of emotions that enveloped around little Mephiles.

"Mommy, Daddy, why? why did they take Shadow away? why do they have to do that? He didn't do anything wrong, did he?" he asked them, his voice was soft and cracking. His mother carried him in her arms and embraced him tightly, she was still crying but she answered her son's questions nonetheless.

"You see sweetie, King Doom doesn't have any children, and as king, he has the right to do what he wants, no matter how unfair it is to us citizens" soft thumbs wiped away Mephiles' tears. He wouldn't accept the reason

"But why Shadow?? Why my brother?" It was his father that answered this time, for his mother couldn't continue

"Mephiles, you have to be strong. It was.... it was an arrangement.. When the king found out that your mother and I were having twins, he ordered to have either one of you as the prince of our country. Remember when you and Shadow were playing once and we had visitors? That was the king. After seeing you two, he said that Shadow would be fit as the next king."

"But why my brother???? Why us??? Why our family???"

His father sighed, "It's complicated son; I used to be a tactician for the king during the war. I retired when your mother was pregnant with you and your brother. The war had long since been gone anyway, so I decided to retire. There are things we can't control Mephiles, you wouldn't understand now but when you grow older, you will.

The young ash-colored male still couldn't fathom his parents' words. Why? that question kept repeating itself in his mind. He could not accept the reasons, he could not accept that this happened to them.

Now, the only memory he had of his brother was his smile; his carefree, happy smile. 

And he carried that memory until he grew up and vowed to be united with his dear brother no matter what.
