Leaving Hollywood and Woltz behind, Fiona went to Connie's.
After spending some time with Connie, Fiona decided to go back home- exhaustion caught up to her faster than she expected or wanted. As she went home, Roberto was no where to be seen- a note, however, was found.'Be back soon- with the family. Business with Sollozzo.' Her brother's hand writing was rushed and she could tell because it was like a 5 year old scribbling. All Fiona knew about Sollozzo was he wanted Vito in his little narcotic corporation- she personally didn't agree with that and hoped Vito wouldn't agree to the new business deal.
She jumped on the sofa and pulled out her book, reading the words till it became blurry, till her eyes teared up.
Roberto came back home exhausted, only to find his sister asleep on the couch, the book open on the floor while she laid on the sofa in a fetus position. "Sheesh, you have a bed." Roberto spoke to himself, removing his coat and hanging it.
Roberto heated up some hot milk while he sat on the kitchen table, his palms laying flat on the marble counter. Roberto knew that Vito not accepting the business deal with Sollozzo meant bad business, he could sense that bad things will start to happen.
But he pushed away his assumptions and took a sip of his hot milk. His eyes traveled around his surroundings until it laid on his sleeping sister. His harsh expression turned soft, it turned to a frown.
'Why did his father ever get her involved in the family business?' Roberto thought to himself. Fiona should have just been a normal girl, get married and have children and live a comfortable life. Instead, she was here with him, in the business, sometimes shooting and killing people or doing a job that wasn't necessarily clean.
Roberto watched his sister once, killing a man without flinching, or hesitating or even thinking about it. She did her job like any other man in the family would.
That impressed Vito, it impressed him a lot. It was unusual for a woman to do this, but not Fiona.
Roberto was shaken away from his thoughts as his sister started to stir in her sleep, he could see she was shaking slightly. She was cold.
He went into her room and took her white blanket, covering her with it. He placed a kiss on her forehead before strolling to his room to pass out on his bed.
Fiona was startled by the ringing telephone, she was tangled in her blanket and as she got up, she fell down.
Roberto's room was open and he was sound asleep on his bed, she hurried to the phone and answered it- afraid that the continuance of the phone will wake her brother up. "Hello?"
"Hello, Fay?" Fredo's voice traveled to her ear. "Hey Fredo, how are you?" She said gently, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
"I'm fine. Did I wake you?" Fredo asked, noticing the sleep that was still laced in her voice. "Not at all. What can I help you with?" Fiona was still sleepy- she sat on the floor and crossed her legs.
"Can I take you out tonight for lunch?" Fiona's eyes drifted to the clock on the wall, it was only 10 am. Before Fiona could protest, Fredo made it clear. "Its only a friendly outing, I promise. I'll pick you up at 1?" Fiona could hear a bit of desperation in his voice. Either ways how could she say no? All he's ever done to her was being sweet and gentle.
"Alright Fredo, pick me at 1." She said to him in a caring tone. "See you then." She could hear the smile in his tone before he ended the call.
She always knew Fredo had a thing for her, he hinted here and there, bringing her little gifts from different places, whenever she was in sight, his eyes would glitter. She couldn't ignore it, it was too obvious.
But she didn't have the same feelings for Fredo, even if she tried she couldn't, she only saw him as a brother.
Fredo and Fiona sat down and ate their lunch, a hot mug of chocolate was the main income of warmth for Fiona as she wrapped her hands around it.
"How's Roberto doing?" Fredo asked Fiona with a small smile that was always on his face as he talked to her. "He's doing fine." She smiled back.
"What did your father say about Sollozzo's business?" Fiona asked the question that was floating in her mind for awhile. She didn't know she held in her breath till Fredo answered. "He refused." Fredo replied simply.
She sighed in relief and after they ate their lunch, Fredo insisted they went to walk around, looking at Christmas presents.
"What do you think I should get Sonny?" Fredo asked, subconsciously breaking the space between them.
Fiona chuckled, "I don't know Fredo, I was gonna ask you the same thing. He's a bit picky." Fiona said the last part in a low voice that Fredo heard and chuckled.
While they were looking at different presents, some clothes, some toys for kids, they bumped into two people Fiona thought she wouldn't see in a long time.
When Fiona saw his face, her heart thumped in an odd manner, as if her heart flipped in her chest at the sight of Michael.
But Fiona felt stupid because Kay was there. "Mikey good to see you!" Fredo exclaimed happily embracing his brother who had to force his eyes away from Fiona.
"Hello Kay." Fiona smiled, shaking her hand. Kay said a polite hi to Fiona.
"Hello Michael." Fiona said to Michael after Fredo embraced him. "Hi." Michael's smile was sweet and charming. Fredo instantly noticed how the atmosphere changed when the two bumped into each other.
Fredo instantly noticed how Fiona's attitude changed, how her cheeks became rosy not because of the cold but because of Michael. Fredo noticed how Michael, even though Kay was there, couldn't shift his gaze away from Fiona.
Fredo knew that Fiona and Michael took an interest of each other. Fredo knew that Fiona might have had a thing for his brother, and Fredo knew that Michael might have had a small place in his heart that will soon spread to colonize all the space in his heart in the name of Fiona.
Fredo knew he couldn't get what he wanted or needed. Fredo couldn't get Fiona. Fredo envied whoever caught the attention of Fiona- which not many got the chance to do. But his brother did. Fredo envied Michael.
