SETTING:  FLASHBACK. A classroom.

AT RISE: TEACHER stands beside WILLOW's desk, who stares vacantly ahead. CASSIA sits in the desk beside WILLOW's.

TEACHER: Willow! Willow Anderson!

CASSIA: Willow, the teacher's talking to you.

WILLOW: (looking up, confused) Oh, umm... Yes?

TEACHER: (coldly) I thought I asked you for your homework, but apparently the message didn't get across. So I ask again, where is your homework?

WILLOW: I... I'm sorry, I didn't kno-

TEACHER: That's the third time this week. I will not tolerate this type of behavior in my class. If you weren't listening yesterday then that is your mistake. (WILLOW is silent.) If you weren't doing your homework yesterday, then what WERE you doing?

(WILLOW stammers, trying to come up with an answer, then falls silent.)

TEACHER: Whatever it is, it was not more important than your grade in my class.

WILLOW: (quietly) There are some things more important than all of us.

(The bell rings.)
