A phone number or address for Felicity was next to impossible to find. I forgot about the high security status that would surround her. Luckily, I still had some remaining contacts. I received her address securely; after all threatening her security would not get me any bonus points in her eyes. The plan was just to turn up and leave a message. My contact told me when a good time to drop in would be, he even got me a security pass. I flashed the pass and was buzzed in at the gates. Two security guards escorted me to her door which was through about fifty internal doors. I went to slip the note under the door when I heard the latch flip up from the inside and someone pulled the door open.
Jane Hamilton opened the door, much to my surprise. After a brief but awkward silence, she keyed in my name to the house control pad.
“What are you doing here?” Jane asked.
“I was going to give this to Felicity.” I replied gesturing to the note in my hand.
“Fliss is kind of busy right now, and can’t be disturbed. Should I give it to her for you?”
She nodded to the security guards and they left after the note was firmly in her hand.
I opened my mouth to speak, but she filled the silence quicker than I could.
“Sorry for, you know, at the courts. It wasn’t a good time…” her voice faded out. I could detect the shyness in her voice. She never looked directly at me and it made me feel nervous.
“I… err… shouldn’t have been so… yeah… sorry.” Where was that confidence those years of being in the spotlight had given me? This was hopeless.
“Do you want a drink or something? Fliss would want to invite you in.”
She led me into Felicity’s open plan house that looked clinical, all in white. Jane’s flat shoes clicked on the gleaming tile floor. Jane was very tall; she dwarfed Felicity’s furniture easily. She read out the names of the contents of Felicity’s fridge, but it glazed over me so I had to deal with water, rather than listen to the list again. I looked across to the television that was blurring quietly in the background of my thoughts, then I realised I was watching our film. Jane quickly realised that I had noticed the film on the television.
“Fliss loves that film. She almost knows every line.” Jane smiled taking a sip of what looked like champagne.
“You’re a bit young to be drinking.” I remarked, changing the focus to Jane. “Well done on you’re A levels, by the way.”
She showed me the bottle of Appletiser to prove she wasn’t a raving alcoholic, and then she thanked me for the compliment. Her results had been almost a headline for most of the papers so it was only fair of me to compliment her on it.
“You up to much these days? I haven’t heard much about One Direction recently.”
Was that a silent dig? If it was I didn’t really notice it.
“No, not really. You’ve obviously been quite busy. I bought your album, it was good.”
I wasn’t going to volunteer the information about my purchase of the album but her face just made me want to tell her everything.
A smile spread across her face. “I’m glad that you liked it.” Her smile dropped as she realised something “The title wasn’t a dig at you. We didn’t get to choose the title. Three words have two meanings.” She mumbled apologetically
“Oh...ok” I replied, that was all I could manage. Apart from not really thinking about the title, I couldn’t focus for some reason. I just watched her talk, with expressions changing quicker than seconds changed on a clock.
“Felicity will be back soon.” An awkward chuckle separated the speech, so I gave a fairly unresponsive reply and laughed a bit too, although I hadn’t heard what she had said.
“Are you okay?” She asked with a cold concern.
“Yeah, I guess. Just a bit distracted.”
An alert flashed on the house system software.
“Felicity’s back…I’ll be going now.”
“Hey, err… maybe we could do something sometime… Here’s my new number.” I sent my number to her phone via email, and she acknowledged the action politely.
“Ok...Talk to you at some point.”
She exited, passing Felicity on the way to the security car, telling her that she had a ‘special visitor’.
