A/N: This is just a subchapter. It's not really long enough to be a real one.
I had deliberately asked Jane to stay. My psychology was that if Harry chose to stay, he was good friends with Jane. If he left, then Jane was just a friend, not anything more. I found out that they didn’t think that they were in a relationship because they didn’t share a room. So Harry wanted to be more than a friend, but Jane showed no emotions, as usual. I decided to test him, whether he would be good enough for Jane.
That night, I deliberately gave him coffee instead of tea. I know, it was bad of me, but sometimes you have to play dirty, especially as my prize winning niece was involved. He was too polite to object. Good start.
He couldn’t sleep, and instead just sat at the top of the stairs watching Jane sleep. Jane was silly enough to leave the door open, so anyone could see her toss and turn in her sleep. I hid, so he couldn’t see me watch him. After I decided that he wasn’t going to do anything else that night, I decided to talk to him. I had done this with all my children’s perspective partners. Sadly, there was nothing I could do about Annabelle, she was perfectly nice to my face. I didn’t realise that she would later enslave my eldest and physically abuse my niece. This was not going to happen to Jane. She was not going to be stuck with some tattooed idiot.
“Can’t sleep, sweetie? Why don’t we go downstairs, I can’t sleep either.” He accepted my invite to come downstairs. Once we had sat down with cups of tea, I started the grilling. I had to be gentle at first, so he didn’t realise he was being tested.
“So, can you tell a concerned Auntie what exactly is going on in my darling Niece’s love life, at the moment?”
“Er… I don’t know. I’m not her boyfriend, if you thought that. I’m just a friend, I think.”
“Her emotions aren’t very clear, are they? They never have been, not to anyone.” I gave him a sense of security by saying that she wasn’t ever very clear about what she felt about people, making him think that he was still in with a chance of winning her heart. Poor kid, my niece is virtually the ice queen when it comes to emotions. We chatted until morning. He seemed alright, but he wasn’t anything special. I doubted that Jane would be interested in anything more than friendship. I was surprised that he was interested in Jane, though (other than for her money). Jane didn’t seem to be that sort of girl. Opposites attract, I guess.
