"Thank you so much, Paula. I really appreciate it." I sighed, hanging up the phone.
"What'd she say?" Stiles asked, not taking his eyes away from the blocks he was building with Ena.
"She says I can stay. They're gonna get a sub in."
"That's great! Hopefully we can see Lydia again soon then." He gently pushed the tower Ena had created, wobbling it slightly.
"Hey! Stop, you're gonna ruin it! Then all the families will have no place to live! How will you feel then, huh?" She scolded Stiles, supporting the creation with her small palms.
I was definitely not a sassy person, far from it. So Ena's reaction was really entirely Stiles' own fault. He'd raised that in her.
"In fact, I'm going to go find the nice nurse and ask if we can go back in yet." He ruffled Ena's hair and walked off towards the front desk.
Ena packed up her blocks and went over to the toy box to find something new to play with.
I suddenly felt very alone but, both fortunately and unfortunately, their absence was hurriedly filled with Scott's presence.
"Hey, Kira." He doesn't look at me, instead he carefully watched Ena.
"Hey, Scott." I awkwardly returned his greeting.
We hadn't spoken since my announcement. Derek and Helena had gone home so I had distracted myself from the situation with my phone and Ena.
I hadn't given Scott a chance to talk until now.
"Umm, can we talk?" He lifted his eyes fleetingly, allowing me a glance but nothing more.
"Sure."
Have you ever seen the movie Alien? You know the scene where it bursts out of her chest? That's what i was feeling. Like something was clawing through my insides, pressing on the surface just waiting to launch.
"Was it hard? Raising Ena, I mean. Especially at such a young age." His question was abrupt and awkward.
It was a question that, for anyone else, would make them think about themselves and their lives in depth. But I didn't have to think about the answer at all. He still did not look at me. And I almost refused to answer his question, offended by his distance. But he deserved to know, really. Despite his detachment.
"It's the hardest thing I've ever done. But I've had help from Stiles and his dad as well as my own parents. And I love Ena with all of my heart. So in a way- it's the easiest thing."
A moment of silence encompassed the small bubble we'd created.
"You, Kira Yukimura, are so completely brave and strong. You should be proud of yourself."
I listen to his words, gratefully taking them in. But everything he said, I already knew. I was brave and strong, clearly. And I am definitely proud of myself.
A content quiet floated between us before he spoke again.
"Kira, I'm so sorry that I left."
The unexpectedness of the statement drew my eyes to his. I waited for him to continue, to elaborate on his sentence that had sent my mind into a whirlwind of confusion.
"I... wish we could have figured out a way to keep our relationship going." A breath-holding pause broke his speech, "I still love you Kira. And I was wondering, maybe, if you wanted to try again?"
I took a moment to process his offer.
It ticked over in my mind and as I broke it down, tears crawled into my eyelids.
I watched the sincerity of his face with blurry vision.
"I would love that." I ignored the embarrassment of my cracking voice and released a smile. Our conversation had been short but held so much meaning.
"Although, I am meant to be moving to Australia in six months..." His previous optimism disintegrated and I immediately felt the need to fix it.
"I've always wanted to go to Australia."
With a cheerful grin he gazed over at me and flicked his eyes to Ena for a brief moment.
"Really? You'd want to move in with me?"
That was the rashest agreement I've ever made but it was the right one. I've always told myself that I would try endlessly to provide Ena with a worthwhile, adventure-filled childhood. What's more adventurous than moving to a different country with a ex-lover? Granted, more-tan-slightly spontaneous- what's the worst that could happen?
At this point, Ena made her way back over to us. Pens and paper were held tightly in her grasp as she plonked herself on the floor.
With a nod, I returned his smile.
"Ena, what are you going to draw?" He grinned at the girl whose legs were sprawled out over the itchy carpet floor. The paper sat between her legs and the pen sat carefully in her hand.
"I don't know. What do you think?" She shrugged.
"How about the country Australia?" I chuckled at Scott's suggestion.
"I don't know what that is." She shook her head.
"It's a beautiful country. Your mum and I were thinking of moving there. Would you want to do that?"
Ena put the pen down with the paper, sensing the sudden seriousness of the conversation. She nervously walked over to me, manoeuvring herself between my legs.
"Like living there?"
"If you wanted to."
"You and my mum and me?" Scott nodded and confusion played games on her face. She had just met his man, why would she want to move in with him?
But I shot her a reassuring smile, one that expressed he was trustworthy.
"Would we still see Oji Stiles?"
"The move wouldn't be for a few months and you could call him whenever you want. Maybe even video call, so he can see you!"
Ena holds herself close to me with uncertainty.
Scott watched her with pleading eyes and I could tell she felt intimidated.
"It's up to you, Ena." I comforted her, trying to dampen the intensity of Scott's expectant gaze.
"I think that would be cool" she spoke with confidence, "that's where the Emu's live right?"
"It sure is! And we'd see heaps of animals because I'm a vet. I'd love a cute little assistant like you!" Scott was clearly excited, with his quick release of information but Ena smiled regardless.
"What sorts of animals would there be?"
She released her grip on my leg, walking over to Scott and placing her small hands on his knees.
"Definitely dogs, cats and bunnies! Maybe Koalas and little baby Joeys!"
Ena laughed with glee at the idea.
"I can't wait to see the baby Joeys!"
