THREE
Waking at my usual time of six am, I got dressed in my running gear and went for my usual morning jog. Down to the near-by town that allowed only the nīeten in and out. Humans were only allowed in if they had special permission. Entering the bakery that I knew would be open, the one I'd been running to since Tuesday, I was greeted warmly.
"Hello, Mixture," the old bear shield said from behind the counter. She'd given me the nickname because we weren't sure what I was, except I knew I was a mixture of different breed of cats. The scientists still didn't know what I was. "What would you like today? Oh, and here, have this on the house. You need to stay hydrated, you know."
She gave me a cool bottle of water. "Thank you."
She smiled at me. "Your very welcome, dear. Now, you take a sip and decide on what you'd like. With all that runnin', and metabolism you have, you need to keep eatin' fatty foods, or you'll be skin and bones in no time."
I did as she told me and took a sip as I looked over the cakes she had. She was right. If I didn't eat fatty foods, I'd be less than skin and bones, I'd be thinner than a twig in no time.
"How about that one? A light chocolate éclair. Actually, could I have two? I'm feeling rather hungry."
She chuckled. "I think I'll just bag it ready for you in the future. Always the same."
I smiled.
I paid for my two éclairs and the water, refusing to have it for free. I ate the éclairs in the bakery, keeping her company. Thanking her, and saying I'd see her tomorrow, I left. On the way to the town it took me fifteen minutes. But on the way back, I walked, then jogged after I felt I'd waited long enough for my food to settle, it generally took thirty to forty minutes on the way back.
Entering my room, I went and showered. Once I was done, I got dressed in fresh clothes and started packing. Last night, we – Archie and myself – agreed to bunk since we didn't get along with other's very well. And I knew Archie wouldn't try anything, we were more like siblings than anything else. I was moving into his room because he'd had it longer, and I had only a few things. Fewer things meaning that I had my clothing, school things and very little else.
By nine I had everything ready to move. Deciding to try my luck with Archie being awake, I went over to his room.
It took three knocks until I heard movement on the other side of the door. I nearly smiled as Archie opened the door, rubbing his eyes with the palm of his hand as he yawned "what?".
"Mornin' to you too," I replied, ducking under his arm to enter.
"Mornin'?" he parroted in a confused tone, closing the door. "It's only just gone nine! I don't wake for another hour... or two. What time did you wake up?"
"Six."
He blinked at me, and woke as though I'd just thrown an ice cold bucket over his head. "Six? Is that even allowed?"
"You won't hear me, I go for a run, and generally get back after seven."
He mumbled about crazy women, six o'clock, and running, as he dragged himself over to bed and fell on it. Seconds later, he was asleep.
Two hours later, I came out of my nap when I heard Archie move into a sitting position. Giving him privacy while he got dressed, I pretended to still be asleep. Once he was dressed, I moved.
"Oh my god!" he jumped back. "Don't do that."
I frowned at him.
"I thought you were asleep. I was gunna wake you 'cus, you know, we're supposed to be up and ready by eleven."
