TWENTY-TWO

Waking to seeing dirty coloured eyes above me wasn't expected, what was expected was another lash of the icy winter whip.

"Are you a member of the Claw-Cutters?" the man asked.

I stayed silent. More so because I knew that if I opened my mouth, all that would come out would be a scream of agonising pain as the ice and blood mixed and poured out of me like wine out of a barrel.

"Well?" the man demanded, grabbing my chin in a vise like grip.

Hearing a disappointed sigh from further the room, I was momentarily surprised when the man's eyes who was leaning over me widened in fear a little. Who was it beyond? Who were they to make a nīeten with a gift like this one fear?

"I though you were better than this," the one behind spoke. It was a male, no female could have such a deep voice. Not like that.

As the man over me turned to speak to the one beyond, it allowed me to see two other nīeten's. The shield was easy to see as he had two black-blue wings at his back, and his hair and eyes were black-blue also. Although, this shield was short, by guessing, I would have said that this shield wasn't even five foot, yet I could also see little home. This shield was a fighter and survivor as much as he was a shield for his blade.

The blade was much taller and had his own set of wings, tribal wings lay on the man's chest, the mark that the raven beside him was his shield. The tattoo was large and took most of the man's chest which was easy to see since the guy was only standing their in jogging bottoms and no shirt.

Seeing the mark, I wondered where Zane's was to show that we had bonded. I hadn't seen it. But then, with all that had happened, I hadn't really had a chance, and now, who knew if I would. I remembered the mark on Lucas' hand. It looked like a snow leopard was making it's way down a rocky cliff and it's forepaws were nearly on Lucas' knuckles, as though his knuckles were rocks that it was going to use to get down.

Hearing the man over me talk brought me back to reality. "I've tried everything, Sir, nothing is working."

"Everything?" the blade queried.

"Everything I can think of, Sir."

The black eyes stared at me in curiosity. "The drug?"

"It only caused her pain, no signs of death, Sir."

A light appeared in those eerie depths then as he came closer. "Breed her. Imagine the army we could build if we had many like her–"

As soon as he was close enough, I bit him. Horrified at what he'd been saying. Breed me? For an army? No! Then the doctor's words hit me. That if I had intercourse, it was bond me to them, and I would be able to shift. But to be bound to a stranger! And one from here! No! I snarled as a whip of icy winter hit me, lunged for the man hitting me, even though my body screamed and yelled. But chains around my wrists reached there limit and pulled me to tumble back to the floor.

The blade glared at me as his shield checked his wound. The blade who held the gift of the icy whip stood ready.

Seconds or minutes passed before the blade spoke again. "Get the puma in here."

Immediately the shield with the icy whip left, only to return in seconds with the puma in tow. The puma's eyes widened as he saw me. I snarled as the blade whispered in the puma's ear so quietly I couldn't hear. I wasn't sure whether I snarled for what I thought he was saying to the puma, or for the pain, and horror that was entering the puma's eyes as he listened.

The blade's shield with wings came over to me then, gesturing for the blade with the icy whip to do the same. Then too quick for me and my bloody body to react, the bonds were shorter, tighter.

The the icy whip blade disappeared again, and the raven shield returned to his blade's side where the puma refused to look anywhere but at the floor.

Again, it must have been only seconds since the blade disappeared, but when he reappeared and came over, I got weary, what was he going to do... A slight stab in my neck and the feeling of liquid being inject was the only thing I felt, pulling away, the shield quickly moved away.

Then they all stared at me, but the puma shield who still hadn't looked up from the floor. A minute later, I felt what they were waiting for. Tired. My mind started to become sluggish. My body dead weight. The last thing I saw was the puma heading for me. My eyes closed to darkness. Then just before my body and mind followed, I heard the puma muttering tear filled words.

"They'll kill Sierra if you don't. Get it over and done with. They'll kill Sierra..."
