"Being a sabre, your different to the normal nīeten. You get "extra's", "gifts", if you like."

"Why only sabre's? Why not the whole of the nīeten race?"

The doctor shrugged as we entered his office. "We have a theory. The reason why only the sabre's have "gifts" is because if the whole of the nīeten race had the sabre's "gift", then humans would most likely be enslaved.

"However, we have also been looking at all the research we have as though sabre's are a completely different species as well."

"So your saying I'm an anomaly?" At least mum had something right. I felt a twinge of pain at the thought of my mum.

As the doctor sat behind his desk, his wings moving to accommodate his position, Zane spoke through our bond, probably feeling the dip in my mood from when I thought about my mum.

You okay, Val?

I'm good. Just thought about mum.

A wave of reassurance and love came through the bond. Settling my nerves. Reminding me that I had Zane. That he'd always be there.

"No. I'm saying that apart for you – that we know of – the sabre's are extinct."

I moved over to look out the window that looked out over the main part of the school. He could see everything from here, I thought as I looked around. "What makes a sabre so powerful?"

"Sabre's are half-blade, half-shield and they can shapeshift. Through the research that has been done on the others, we're guessing that it's the shapeshifting ability that allows you to take more damage than a normal shield, and it also allows you to heal much faster. The only thing sabre's don't have is a blade's magic."

"So, in other words, I'm like a tank. I can take a heavy amount of damage and can fight."

"That's a very good summary. I never thought of it that way before. However, if sabre's are tanks, then you are more."

What? I frowned at him. "So what am I?"

"You are a sabre, but you've experienced some of the things that the other's went through, yet they weren't as strong as you. But then, they had a different childhood to yours." He didn't mention what things made mine different to theirs. Having turned back to the window, I watched his reflection cock his head like a bird. "Have you ever had intercourse?"

Turning, I blinked at him. "What?" I frowned. "Why?"

"Because, to change shape, you need to have had intercourse. It's another one of those bond things. We think that by bonding that way allows the partner to control the animal inside. What happened in the lab, the pain you suffered, the blacking out, destroying the room, we think that it's the sabre trying to find other ways to find release until you have intercourse."

"So, what your saying is that if I have sex, I won't suffer or black out again and destroy a room?"

"Well, I don't think that you'll destroy anything again because you already have half the bond you need with Zane." He paused. "I'm not telling you this to make you go have intercourse so that you'll be able to change shape, I just want you aware."

"Will the person I bond to physically be able to stop me changing shape?"

"From what we saw of the last sabre, no. Instead, you'll be more likely able to control them. The sabre told the one who'd bonded with her, to never stop her from changing, and during the life of the sabre, the one who'd been bonded to the sabre never did."

A thinking silence filled the room. So much information, yet so little, about what I was. "Can I go think about everything you've said?"

"Of course," he replied. "You know where I am if you need me."

Nodding, I turned and left the room. Left the school grounds. I needed to think and I couldn't think of any place better than the willow tree that we'd sat under all those days ago.

It was only as I reached the town limits that I remembered that the headmaster had stopped the bonded and blades from leaving. Only as I was hit hard across the head, making me see stars, that I saw why the headmaster had prevented them from leaving. A second hit, harder than the first made me lose consciousness. A fight, there was a massive fight. Fire, water, electric, energy, soared in the air as well as bullets. Hands grabbed me as did the darkness.
