Chapter Two
I woke up far too early for my liking, taking a look at the clock. It read just after ten o’clock, and I groaned before pushing myself on my hands, having laid there for an hour already. I placed my feet on the floor, careful not to wake Sam as I walked around the dorm room, and I rubbed my eyes as I pulled open my closet doors. My phone started ringing the second I plucked a pair of shorts from the hanger, and I vaulted for it before it could wake up Sam. I fumbled around, sliding the lock button and not even bothering with caller I.D. I was surprised to hear a peppy, cheerful voice when I was still groggy from waking up.
“Hey Charley!” “Oh, hi Cassie. What’s up?” “Nothing really. Listen, I’m going to need you to run an errand for me today, yeah?” That was a shocker. “Uh, yeah. What can I do for you?” “I just need you to go grab me a coffee from the Starbucks just off campus, then there’s a grocery store. Do you have a pen and paper?” I hopped into action, rustling around for one until I had them both. “Uh, yeah. List?” “Okay, I need some milk, sugar, eggs, bread, and grapes. I’ll give you the money if you come to the house. It’ll be unlocked.” “Yeah, of course. Just let me get dressed and I’ll be there in twenty.” “Alright. Bye!” She said, and hung up before I could answer. Rolling my eyes, I tugged on my shorts and hunted for a muscle tank and a sports bra. I pulled both on, went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth, sweeping on mascara and eyeliner before I pulled my hair into a messy, high-ponytail, my bangs out. I wrote a quick note to Sam and stuffed my phone in my pocket before taking off.
The sun was already hot as hell as I walked to the house, but I was used to it by now. I typed away on my phone, checking my messages that had been left in the night. Some were from my Ma, others from friends in different counties than I saying how they missed me. I replied to most of them, the ones that mattered anyways, and shoved my phone into my pocket. I was on the sidewalk, the house in sight and nothing on my mind but getting out of the heat, when it happened. I was tackled from the side and I screamed, catching myself on my hands as I took the tumble. That’s when I heard a familiar, deep chuckle, and I pushed my sunglasses up the bridge of my nose before looking. I was stretched out across Pete, his head thrown back in laughter. I hadn’t even hit the ground, only him, and I was still not happy. “You are a jackass.” I grumbled, and he grinned at me. “Well, good morning to you, too.” He said, hauling us both up. “Yeah yeah yeah.” I brushed myself off as he did the same. “So, what are you doing this fine morning?” He asked, looking at me over the top of his ray bans. “Well,” I began snootily, earning a smile from him. “I was on my way to the sorority to run errands for someone, but I was interrupted by a bafoon.” “A handsome bafoon.” He corrected, and I laughed. “What about you?” “I was in the park with a few people.” As if on cue, his name was being shouted in our direction.
We turned and he waved at them, signaling them to shut up, but they looked at each other before beginning their walk over to us from the empty grassy spot they were in. I immediately noticed a few boys from the fair yesterday, but a few were new faces. There were in total about seven of them, all of them incredibly attractive. “Hey, man, who’s this?” “This is my new bestie, Charley.” He beamed, putting a strong, tan arm over my shoulders. I laughed and pushed him off. “Get off of me, it’s too hot out here for that.” “Not as hot as you, babe.” One said, and Pete and I both scoffed. “I believe you meant that for me.” Pete commentated, and I laughed. “Oh yes, Pete. You are soooo hot.” I said, fanning him with my hand. He threw his head back, flicking his imaginary hair. “Why yes. I know this.” He said, and I giggled. “It must be hard looking so attractive.” I stated, and he nodded, looking at me over the edge of his glasses again. “Honey, you have no idea.” I burst into more laughter, and the guys joined in. I turned back to them, ignoring the one eyeing me. “As you all know, I’m Charley. Are you guys in the frat?” I asked, and I got a lot of mumbled yes’s. “I’m Rory.” One spoke up, and they went down the line. “Henry.” “Sleazy-T.” I lifted my eyebrows, but they continued. “Chris.” “Josh.” “Asher.” The one that said I was hot spoke, eyeing me. “And I’m Mikey.” The one holding a Frisbee said, and I nodded. “Nice to meet you.” I turned to Pete, smiling. “I have to go, but I’ll see you tonight.” He gave me a questioning glance. “The party? I’m going to be there.” He beamed, nodding. “Yeah, yeah, great! I’ll see you then, yeah?” “Mmhmm. Have fun killing yourself in the heat playing Frisbee.” “You’ll love my sweaty bod, hon.” He said, wiggling his eyebrows. I laughed, shaking my head. “Gross. Bye.” I said, and he pulled me into a friendly hug. “Bye, Charley.” He and his brothers ran off, and I continued my way up the path.
