I jumped up from my position at the counter at the sound of the door opening.
I was slightly disappointed though when I saw it was only Bucky Barnes. I was happy to see him here but he's be really my only costumer for the past week.
He always just sits and reads quietly in a corner. I guess you could say we were friends kinda. We talked here and there.
"Hi Bucky." I greeted cheerily.
He jumped clearly startled. "Are you always here?" He asked.
I sighed "8:00 am sharp to 10:00pm I basically live here. You know while you're out saving the world I'm here trying to show people that there's more to life than how many likes they got on their last Facebook post. As you can see it's not working. I've almost given up if it weren't for the few people like you coming in here eagerly looking to devour their next book."
"Well don't give up I like it here. Quiet." Bucky replied.
"So what will it be?" I asked him.
"I was kinda hoping you'd tell me."
"You want me to pick a book for you?" I asked surprised.
"Yeah."
"Are you sure."
He nodded.
"Alright there is one thing."
I went to the back and returned with my all time favorite book.
I held the cover up for Bucky to see.
"This is personally the best book ever written to me. It's called the Book Thief it's narrated by Death himself and it's about this little girl Lisel Menninger. "
Bucky took the book from my hands gently. He nodded thanks. "I'll take it."
Three days later he came in again and placed the book on the counter.
"I finished." He announced. I nearly spit out my tea.
"That's like an over five hundred paged book!"
Bucky shrugged like it was nothing. "I've got a lot of time."
"Did you like it a least?"
"I did but I hated the ending."
"Why?"
"To be honest I was expecting a happy ending and I wanted one too."
"That's what's great about books though, if the ending sucked like it did in this book it just means it was a good book. And we don't get to choose what happens cause it's from someone else's mind. It keeps you thinking ya know? And I personally think that the ending was the best part. It shows that life can suck but it only sucks if you make it suck really and it shows why the precious moments really are precious." I explained.
Bucky smiled a little, "you're interpretation makes it better."
"Um," he started, "I've been wondering I really like you do you want to hang out later?"
I beamed, "I'd love to! Come back at 7:30."
Bucky smiled and nodded, "I will."
He began to walk out but quickly came back. "I forgot to give you your book." He said holding it out to me.
I pushed it back to him, "keep it."
