CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR

March 11, 2015

"I think this was a great idea, Mom," April smiled at Patty from the passenger seat of their Chevy Malibu.

"Me two, sweetie! We've all had such a hard time, it's good to take a break from real life. Me and your dad used to love this cabin," Patty smiled, reaching over to gently pat April's hand.

"I know, we haven't been here since I was a kid! Plus, Tim's never been and he'll love it there."

"I'm looking forward to relaxing and maybe learning how to fish," Tim grinned from the back seat.

"I can't even imagine you catching a fish, let alone killing it to eat, Tim." Patty chuckled.

"They are very scaly and slimy, baby," April smiled back at him.

"Oh, laugh it up, girls! I'm a man! Fishing can't be that hard. It's like my human nature!"

"Sure, sure, I love you, Tim. Even when you wuss out and I have to help you, remember that." April winked at him.

"Whatever! I'm going to keep killing these bloody, gross zombies now," Tim rolled his eyes, grabbing his Nintendo DS.

"Aren't you playing Plants Versus Zombies?" April giggled.

"I'm very busy here, April. Killing and killing away," Tim rolled his eyes, not looking up from the game.

"Oh boy, I married a real softie," April chuckled.  She had been having an extremely hard time dealing with Zacchya's death. There had been a funeral the week before, but none of The Misfits had dealt with it very well at all. Through all of it, April had never lost her love and trust in Zacchya.  She would never stop missing her best friend, no matter how long she lived.

Patty had decided they should all take a break from real life and spend a few days at a cabin in Colorado Springs. They rented it out a few times when April was younger, but life got busy and they hadn't been back in years.

Plus, Patty knew Nick would want his ashes spread throughout the trees and wilderness there.  He felt more at home in the beauty and realness of nature.

"I have no trouble believing in God, one-hundred percent believing when I'm here, Patty. The light shining through the trees, everything is so beautiful and clean here. The air is crisp and clean, just the way nature intended. The world just runs like it's supposed to. There's nothing to hold you back from being what you are. Man was meant to be here, in nature, enjoying life and this beautiful Earth. We take her for granted so much.  It's good to remember, don't you think, Patty?" Nick had told her the first trip to the cabin.

She missed the way he appreciated life so much.  It was the quality she missed the most.  She could be having the worst day, and Nick's positivity would drag her out of her darkness.  He could always see the light.  It was hard to believe he had been gone, stolen from her by Larry, for over four months. It had been some of the hardest times of her life, but having April and Tim with her really helped.

Patty tried to re-focus and keep it light. April and Tim were dealing with their own grief now and needed her support.  The trip to the cabin seemed like it would be good medicine for their broken spirits.  April had been feeling under the weather for a few days, as well.  Patty guessed it was the stress beating on her immune system, ready to fight off a cold.  Fresh air would definitely help.

They had gone about five hours from Larned, cruising on I-70, making good time. They had just passed into Colorado.  The sun was beginning to set, coloring the sky with brilliant purples, pinks, and oranges.
