CHAPTER SIX
February 17, 2015
When Jacob Track awoke, his head pounded and his stomach churned. He felt like he might throw up. His vision was a bit blurry, but he hoped there was a trash can or toilet nearby in case he did throw up. He wasn't even sure where he was exactly. He tried to blink away the blurriness in his eyes. Slowly the world came into focus. He was in, what looked like, a prison cell. He was surrounded by cement walls. The room held a bed, which he was laying on, a toilet, sink, and a metal door with a small window. He also noticed a small air vent above his bed, about a foot wide. It was a very simple, yet scary room.
Had he done something to get put in jail? He couldn't remember. His head hurt when he tried to remember what had brought him here. Webs of pain ebbed throughout his skull. A wave of nausea overtook him. He rushed to the toilet and expelled his stomach contents. Through his heaving, he felt like he'd been drugged. Sweat poured from his face and body. If he hadn't been drugged, then he was fighting an infection. This didn't feel like the flu or food poisoning. He wished he could remember anything at all.
He stumbled back to bed, pulling the covers up to his neck. He was so tired. He hoped to sleep the sickness away. His body shivered from the fever he was fighting. Hopefully someone would check on him soon. He felt too awful and needed another blanket for warmth. Through his shivering, he longed for his mom to take care of him. She always had a way of making his sick days better.
As he was getting close to dozing off, he heard a sob coming from the other side of the wall. He wasn't completely alone, that was possible good news.
"Hello?" he asked. He knew that he could probably stand on the bed and might see through the vent, but he just felt too weak to stand. There was no answer, but he could still hear a soft sobbing.
"Hello?" he tried to ask a little louder.
"Hello?" a female voice asked.
"Who are you? Are you OK?"
"Jake, is that you? It's me, Zacchya!"
"Zacchya! Where are we?" He was surprised to hear her voice. He sat up, the blankets still wrapped around him. A wave of light-headedness came over him, but he steadied himself against the wall.
"No idea...trapped though. I think I was kidnapped! Are you OK?"
"Kidnapped?! Oh, God...that's awful! I'm feeling a bit sick, but I'm OK. I can't remember anything yet." Jake shook his head in bewilderment. She had been kidnapped by whom? It scared him too much to ask, because apparently, he'd been kidnapped as well.
"Oh no! Probably from the tranquilizers, at least I think it was tranquilizers. They made me a bit queasy too after I woke up." She frowned.
"Wow...crazy." Jake couldn't wrap his head around the situation. He started to get random fuzzy memories in his mind. Walking into town. His house. A van. Then nothing.
Zacchya was in her cell, which was identical to Jacob's. She was standing on her mattress, talking through the air vent, which was equal to her standing height. She could almost see into Jake's room, but the metal slats on the vent blocked her view. She longed to hold him, comfort him and in turn, comfort herself. None of it made any sense. Who would kidnap them? And for what reason? The only person she knew that would do something that awful to anyone was Larry, and he had died in the explosion. The unanswered questions of it all were killing her. She needed to know what it all meant. She had found a way to have a great life, a beautiful life, with Jake ... and then it was taken away from as fast as it had come. Didn't they understand that she'd just gotten him back? How could they kidnap her? How could they kidnap Jake? What did any of it mean?
