Gone, But Not Forgotten

"I'm sorry, Mr. Thiessen. He's gone." The EMT checked his husband's pulse one last time. There was no pulse.

It all dawned on Matt. There was no pulse, his lifeless body laying there on the stretcher in the back of the ambulance. He looked at his husband's solemn face. His eyes closed as if he were asleep.

If only he was just asleep. That Matt would wake up, find this all to be a nightmare. Adam asleep next to him, smiling at the nice dream he was having.

But, no...all of that wasn't the reality. This was reality. His husband was gone, having been hit by a drunk driver. He felt hot tears streaming down his face. Burning his skin as they slid down onto his lover's stone-cold face.

The paramedics asked him if he wanted a ride to the hospital. In his condition, they knew driving his own car wasn't an option. He slowly nodded in response and they shut the doors behind him. He glanced out the back window as they drove to the hospital. He glanced down once again at Adam's lifeless body.

They had tried everything and he was grateful for them and their determination to bring him back. But by the time they had gotten to him, and when Matt drove all the way to the scene of the accident, it was too late.

No words could describe his heart as he watched the doctors and nurses surround his lover's deathbed. They called him in and told him he could say his last goodbyes and that they had already called his parents.

He walked in, trying to hold back tears so he could at least say something.

"Addy. It's me, Matty. I know you can't hear me, but I just wanted you to know that you were my everything. You were the best goddamn thing to happen in my life. I hope you knew and do know that I love you. I love you so much and that is never going to change. You helped me so much more than you know. Heck, I actually wouldn't be here on this Earth if it wasn't for you. You having not been there when I almost ended it. You saved me that night. The night we met and I thank you for that. I always have. I just hope wherever you now are that you're happy. Please don't forget me...I know I won't forget you. Addy, I love you." He leaned over and gave Adam one final kiss on his cold lips, before walking out to the waiting room where a doctor and police officer were waiting with Adam's parents and Matt's mom.

They ran to hug him, all of them in one crying heap, as the officer and doctor left them some space. They consoled one another, but now it was Adam's parents turn to see their son one last time.

Matt remembered that night like it was yesterday. It had been two years. Matt visited his grave whenever he could. He looked at the gravestone:

Adam Randal Young
May his soul forever be with God. For he was a Child of God. And may his music and spirit touch the lives of all who knew him.

Matt had that put on his stone. He also had an engraving of a firefly put in the middle of his birthyear and year of death. He smiled, setting down a bouquet of Adam's favorite flower.

"Hey Addy, it's good to see you." He felt a familiar presence, as if he could feel him standing next to him. He pictured Adam smiling, laughing like in old times.

What he didn't know was Adam was standing right there, his hand on Matt's shoulder.

"It's good to see you, too." Adam whispered, although he knew Matt couldn't hear him. "I love you, Matty. I do and I always will."

The End.

Note: Yep, this one is a tearjerker I literally almost started crying just by writing it. Please don't hate me! This is only a one shot and I promise the only one where Adam dies. Anyways just an idea that popped into my head last minute and wanted to write it down.

I promise I'm working I'm working on a very cute, positive one shot rn and will post it as soon as I can!
