Chapter 2

"Mom, Dad, I'm sorry if I'm hurting you. This hurts me too. But this is something I need to do for me. I've wanted this since I was a little girl, and you know that. I wish there was a way that I could do this that wouldn't hurt you guys but there isn't. And I need you to know that I love you, and I want to make you proud." Great, now I was crying. I thanked God that I was wearing water proof mascara.

"Honey, we love you too. We're just going to miss you so much." My mother was crying even more now, and my dad -who never cries- is on the verge of tears.

"Mom, I'm going to visit as much as I can. Don't forget to remember me, though." I half joked with a chuckle.

"Never in a million years honey." She cried as they both pulled me in for a hug. "Make us proud, Dee"

A couple hours later, all of my things were packed into my small, black Poniac. My parents had both stopped crying, and we were all standing next to my car in the driveway. I sniffed and held back the tears that threatened to spill over. "I love you guys. So much. And thank you for giving me the best life anyone could ask for. And I'm so sorry for hurting you guys and being a brat sometimes and I wish there was a way that I could make everyone happy but I can't. I love you. Never forget that." By now I'm full-on sobbing. So much for that.

"We love you too. Maybe we weren't the best parents sometimes, but we tried our hardest. You were the best daughter any parent could hope for, and we wish you the best on your journey to becoming an actress. We want to give you something, too." My mom pulled out an envelope and handed it to me. With shaking hands, I opened it. Inside was the most gorgeous necklace I'd ever seen and a check for one thousand dollars. My jaw dropped. I looked up and saw both my parents smiling. "Thank you guys so much. I love it." I sobbed while pulling them into a hug.

"Well don't just stand there, put it on!" My mom smiled. I handed the necklace to her and turned around. She fastened it around my neck and adjusted my blonde hair. After hugging them one last time, I opened my car door and placed the check in it's envelope in my purse.

"I love you both. I'm going to make you both proud." I whisper, and brush away some of the tears.

"We don't doubt you for a second. And we love you too." With that, I smiled and got in my car. Backing out of the driveway, I waved one last time. And then I was off.

I stopped at Subway around noon. All that I could think about was my mom crying and how I broke her heart. No, I thought. I need to do this for me. I can't be consumed with guilt for the rest of my life. After ordering a six inch veggie delight on wheat bread with salt and vinegar chips and a diet coke, I realize I need to cash the check my parents gave me. I pay the cashier, grab my food and head back to the car. I turn back around and head towards my favorite bank, excited about the fact that I now have 6,000 dollars in savings. I've been saving up for this since I was 14. A third of my paycheck went to the bank every single time. I quickly cashed the check, and got back on the interstate, headed for California. After driving for about five hours, I stopped to get gas and dinner. When I stepped out of my car at Kwik Trip in the middle of nowhere, I noticed the night air had a bit of a chill to it, so I reached into the back of my car and grabbed the beige cardigan I had for that exact reason. I filled up my gas tank and swiped my Visa to pay for it. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a black van pull in. I thought nothing of it and headed inside.

Pulling open the door, I was greeted by a cheerful "Hello!" from a boy about my age. He was scrawny and needed a hair cut, but he was nice at least. "Hey" I said, and kept walking to the food section of the gas station. Just then, the guy that was driving the black van walked in. He seemed to be following me through the aisles, but he probably just wanted the same thing as me, right? I continued to walk until I found a bag of low sodium pretzels. He stopped too. "Can I help you?" I said as polite as possible.

"I'm Kyle, and I'm looking for a... road trip buddy of sorts. Would you be interested?" He said with a sly smirk.

"Um...no thank you. I'm sort of a loner. But I appreciate the offer" I said while grabbing the bottle of Vitamin Water I wanted.

"Well, honey I don't think you have much of a choice" And with that he clamped a hand over my mouth and tried to drag me into the bathroom. Unfortunately for him, my dad taught me how to fight. I elbowed him in the gut, kicked him in the groin, and had him pinned to the ground in a matter of seconds. I might be 5'4"
and 105 pounds, but my dad tells me I have a hell of a good arm. "Honey, I think you picked the wrong girl to mess with" I whispered coyly in his ear. I kicked him one more time for good measure, picked up my things, and went to pay for them. The boy at the register stared at me in awe. "You know, you could call the cops instead of just standing there." I told him with a little too much sass.

"Uh, right. Hang on." He stuttered and reached down to pick up a phone. "I'd like to report a code blue. Please send a couple officers, but no ambulance will be needed. Thank you." He said into the phone. With that I payed, walked out, got in my car and left. And that was the time that I beat a guy up in the middle of a Kwik Trip.
