So the girl’s name was Camille. I liked it, I hadn't heard it that often before. Her hand was soft as I shook it. But then she quickly let go, and her swift movement was followed by a slightly awkward silence.
I ran my hands through my hair and leaned back in my seat. But Camille was still looking at me, expecting something.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her.
“Um, you didn’t answer my question.” she said carefully.
“What question?” I lied, clearly knowing what she meant. Ugh, if only she would’ve believed that I was visiting family, that way I could’ve told her that I was leaving soon. But she didn’t seem the girl to believe lies.
“About what you are doing here?” she continued.
“Well, what are you doing here?” I replied quickly, emphasizing the ‘you’. Ok, that was so childish of me. But I still wasn’t sure what to respond.
“I’m going back to Antwerp, where I live. And hey, I asked you first!” she laughed, knowing I was trying to change the subject.
I laughed as well. Damn, she just wouldn’t let go. “Fine.” I mumbled. But I wasn’t planning on giving in so fast, “I know you’ve just told me you wouldn’t tell anyone, but how can I completely trust you?”
“You can’t.” her answer surprised me.
“I know it’s not easy to trust people” she continued, and slowly looked away to the window that had raindrops sliding diagonally from the top to the bottom. “But I can assure you, if you give me your trust, I won’t break it. I’m not that kind of a person. If I make a promise, I keep it.”
Her hazel eyes found mine again. I didn’t know why, but I did feel like she was telling the truth. I decided to take the risk.
“Ok,” I said. And the corners of her mouth went slightly up. I told her that I needed to get away from everything, and that I decided to stay in this small country until my break is over.
“But what did you ran away from? And why exactly did you choose this boring country? How long are you staying, and where are you staying?” –
“Ok!” I interrupted her. “Nosy much?” She instantly closed her mouth and bit on her lower lip. I couldn’t help but think how cute she looked, doing that.
“Oh sorry, I tended to do that a lot before.. You know, sometimes I just said whatever was on my mind without knowing I might be irritating the other person. I can't believe that annoying habit is coming back, I mean most of the time I don’t even realize it and I just keep going until somebody.. –“
“Tells you to stop?” I added. She held her hand in front of her mouth, as she realized she was doing it again. Then she just chuckled and nodded.
“Haha, it’s ok.” I said to her, while putting my hand on her arm. “I think it’s kind of cute, actually.”
She looked at me as if I said something wrong. Then the gaze of her eyes travelled to the place where my hand was resting and then slightly shook it off, trying not to make me notice it, but I did. That was a weird reaction to just a normal gesture. Usually girls would do anything to be touched by me.
The train started slowing down. I wanted to know more about this girl. She had an interesting personality. In this hour I’ve know her, I discovered she could be fierce and stubborn but at the same time really nice and caring. And then I felt like there was another side of her. Something that she tried to keep hidden somehow, but I noticed the way she talked about trust and the way she didn’t want me to come too close. Yeah, I could be pretty observant sometimes. I needed to, since I had to be careful about who I talked to. I learned to notice quickly who had good intentions and who did not. Camille seemed to have only good ones.
If I wanted to know more about her, then I would have to let her know more about me. So I decided to return to our previous subject. “So Camille, I’ll answer your questions –“ then I noticed the train has stopped. “but I’m afraid we’ll have to get off the train first.”
She looked outside, as if she hadn’t noticed either, and then nodded. I stood up and picked my bag off the ground. Then I stepped to the side, into the aisle, so Camille could get out of her seat as well. As she walked past me, the air she made with her movement carried her scent towards me. It was sweet and fresh. I saw her walking to the doors and I quickened my step to catch up with her.
As soon as I stepped out the doors, I admired Antwerp Central Station. Now I knew why they said this was one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.
I heard someone giggling and turned left to see it was Camille. “Oh Harry, now you only need a camera and then you could fit in that group of tourists over there!” and she pointed to a large group of people who were admiring the station the same way as I was doing, and taking hundreds of pictures at the same time.
I chuckled and walked towards her. “So, is there any place we can go to continue our conversation?” I asked her.
“Well, there’s a Starbucks in the station, we can go there if you’d like?” she replied.
I nodded. “Great, I could use some coffee.” I was pretty sleepy actually. I had been travelling since early this morning, or should I say middle of the night? I had decided that was the best time to leave England. It was a miracle that I hadn’t fallen asleep on one of the trains yet.
“Starbucks it is!” she said enthousiastically, and gestured me to follow her.
As I was walking up to her, my phone buzzed. I took it out of my beige coat to see I had one new text; it was from Kendall.
