"Rian, where are they?" I asked impatiently while looking at my watch, "Our appointment's in 10 minutes. You don't think he's having second thoughts?"
It was 6:20 pm and all the preparations have been made. Well, on our end at least. But our job was pretty easy; all we had to do was find a chapel that wasn't incredibly trashy. Which we did. We were scheduled to be married by a legitimate minister with the Vegas skyline in the background.
Did I mention our appointment was in 10 minutes? Because it is, and Alex and Zack are no where to be found.
"Second thoughts on marrying you? Nah," Rian responded, "Second thoughts on doing it in Vegas? Maybe. I'm sure they'll be here any minute."
I hope so; I feel like I'm going to puke. It wouldn't be for the first time today, but still equally as gross. Especially if Alex does show up, then he'd have to kiss me with rancid breath. Now we all know that would be disgusting.
A few more minutes ticked by and I was starting to lose hope. He really wasn't going to show up. So, to say I was incredibly happy when I saw Zack and Alex sliding out of a taxi at 6:27 was an understatement. I sighed in relief as they walked through the door that led into the building. Alex smiled and met my gaze and him and Zack came over to join us.
"I missed you today Jay," Alex said, leaning down to kiss me before sitting down in the chair next to mine.
"I missed you too," I returned, resting my hand on his thigh, "You ready?"
Alex smiled, "Yeah. My mom called while Zack and I were looking at rings. She got so upset when I told her we were here. I didn't even have to tell her why, she just knew."
I chuckled, "Well she knows you and she knows me. I'm surprised she hasn't called to yell at me yet."
Alex shrugged, "Maybe she's letting us have our night. Or she's waiting until we get back to have your mom as back up."
I shivered, "Now that's scary."
I heard Rian laugh from the other side of me, "You guys are so in for it."
I rolled my eyes, "Shut it potato head," I said, knowing how much he hated that nickname.
Rian opened his mouth to most likely insult me back, but was interrupted by one of the employees.
"Appointment for Barakat," she called.
I squeezed Alex's thigh and smiled, "It's time."
He smiled back before standing up, "That would be us," he said to the employee.
I stood up and took Alex's hand as we followed her to the back. Zack and Rian came with us, only trailing awkwardly a few feet behind.
"Before we get started with the ceremony, there are a few things you need to know," she said, smiling at Alex and I, "If same sex marriage isn't legal in the state you live in, the marriage won't be valid after you leave Nevada. Because of this we don't sell marriage licenses for same sex, you have to get those in your home state. We will do name changes if you wish."
I looked over at Alex; we haven't even talked about names. Would we keep our separate last names? I'd kind of like if we had the same though, just as an extra way of saying, 'this is forever.' Maybe we could combine names. I've heard of gay couples doing that before. I'm personally not a huge fan, but if Alex wants to I will.
Alex smiled at me, "I know we haven't talked about this yet," he said, shrugging, "But I was thinking I could take your name? You know, because of Michelle? I also really want us to be the same."
I smiled back and kissed his forehead, "Alex Barakat. Has a nice ring to it."
"What do you guys want to do first?" We were asked, "Ceremony or paperwork? It's the paperwork that makes it legal, but most couples feel more official after the ceremony."
"Do you want to get the paperwork out of the way?" Alex suggested, "Then after the ceremony we can celebrate."
I nodded, "Sounds perfect."
The employee-whose name I had yet to learn-smiled at us, "Alright, if you'd follow me then. Your friends can wait in the chapel over there."
I'd almost forgotten that Rian and Zack were here. Rian's been uncharacteristically quiet. I'd been expecting him to crack some kind of gay joke. And once he gets going, Zack's usually not far behind... They have a strong friendship dynamic like that, Zack needs Rian to break out of his shell. If they were gay I'd set them up.
Alex and I followed the employee to an office-type room in the back. It was decorated plainly, consisting of a desk with three chairs, a few filling cabinets and a potted plant in the corner. She signaled for us to sit down as she looked through one of the filling cabinets.
"Ok," she said, sitting down in front of us, "We have a marriage certificate, that once signed, is valid in any state for 30 days. You need to take this to any government building in your state of residence to trade for a license. I also have forms for name change that you need to take with the marriage certificate."
The paperwork was light, yet very important. After we finished filling stuff out, we handed it back to the woman. She signed and stamped everything that was necessary before handing it back to us. I scanned over what I held in my hand in awe. Technically, this is all we need. We're legally married. I looked over at Alex and saw he was looking at me. I blushed when we made eye contact.
"Now if you come with me," she said, standing up and heading towards the door, "We can authenticate everything."
I smiled and took Alex's hand in mine. We were minutes away from the rest of our lives. He squeezed my hand tightly as we followed. I couldn't tell if he was nervous or just excited. I know I'm excited, but that doesn't mean he's not nervous.
I liked to think that I knew how his mind works by now. If I do infact know him like I think I do, then I know he's freaking out right now. He won't be calm until there are rings on our fingers and our lips had met for the most important kiss of our relationship. That's ok though, I'm usually the calm one in stressful situations and even I'm freaking out a bit. So I can't really blame, not that I would anyway.
When we walked in, Rian and Zack turned around in there seats. They both smiled and stood up to follow us to the front. I pressed all the paperwork I was holding into Rian's chest muttering for him to hold it.
The alter itself was really simple. A podium sat underneath a white, picket post arch. There was just enough room under the arch for two and that's all we'll need.
We stood across from each other on either side if the arch. I took his hands in mine and smiled. He smiled back and squeezed my hand as the minister started talking.
For me, the ceremony itself went by in a blur. I didn't really pay attention to what was being said. I was to caught up in my own thoughts. I next thing I knew, Alex was saying "I do," and slipping a cool band of silver on my finger. I looked down at it and thought, "just another eternity, no big."
"By power vested in me and the state of Nevada, I now pronounce you husband and husband. You may kiss your groom."
I leaned down and planted my lips on Alex's. Time seemed to stop and everything was perfect. I could feel our relationship change. We were no longer boyfriends, and that's something I never thought I'd be ok hearing. This is the star of a brand new adventure for us. And I absolutely can't wait.
